El maletin rojo es la metafora de una memoria; memoria a la que acude el autor, como recurso literario, para mostrarnos la importancia de su permanencia como fuente de conocimiento; recurso con el que muchos autores nos han deslumbrado llevandonos a espacios solo vividos por ellos trasmitiendonos sus emociones. La protagonista de la obra mantiene un monologo con el maletin de viaje, unico companero de sus aventuras, en un intento por desasirse de los recuerdos ante esa duda, que a todos nos golpea, de si fue el tiempo pasado el que modelo el tiempo presente o si este es parte de una identidad. Los viajes, metafora tambien, forman parte del devenir de la vida, de la que todos formamos parte, y que va modelando el espiritu del caminante para decirnos con palabras del poeta: Caminante, no hay camino sino estelas en la mar... Los personajes, que aparecen a lo largo de la obra, son un muestrario de caracteres que se cruzan en nuestro camino; personajes sencillos la mayoria que vivieron en un tiempo en el que hoy nos puede llenar de asombro, pero es precisamente su sencillez la que nos trasmite ternura.

Al sur de Capricornio gira en torno a la memoria, la luz, la soledad interior, “es el vivir sin vivir en mí”. Se inicia con las lágrimas de una diosa, Juno, a la que se invoca, al estilo clásico, pidiendo ayuda para la tarea, y concluye con la elegía al profesor amigo que guio los primeros pasos en el difícil arte de la poesía. De esta manera, se une la inspiración con el oficio, la musa y la técnica: que en eso consiste la creación poética, dice el poeta inglés Philip Sidney. Es un poemario de verso sencillo, coloquial, que recuerda a la poesía de Dickinson, de Lorca, de Neruda. Nada excepcional, porque todo lo que nos rodea es materia del poema. En especial el hogar, la familia, las gentes que se saludan en el caminar diario. La primera regla es la música, seguida del ritmo, la canción: “Dulces son los placeres que contiene el verso y doblemente dulce su hermandad con la canción” cita ella del poeta John Keats. Luego viene la ternura, el vuelo de las cigüeñas entretejiendo el ensueño con la exaltación mística de Teresa de Jesús. La voz que se escucha, que vacila, que ensalza el espíritu y la carne por igual es siempre una voz femenina en primera persona. La voz de la amiga, de la madre, de la hija, de la amante. De la soledad que se torna melancolía, tristeza, nostalgia, desolación, desesperanza: “fantasía azul”. La poesía de Pepita Jiménez tiene no sólo destreza, elegancia, palabras, metáforas, canto y ritmo, sino el aliento cálido y acogedor frente al espasmo frío y desapacible de una existencia sin respuestas. Who shapes the European Union's policy towards Latin America? How has this EU policy modified individual member states' relations with the region? This book provides a comparative account of seven member states' bilateral links with Latin America since 1945, in the context of their EU membership and based on the concept of 'Europeanization'. It illustrates how and why the main architects of this EU policy have been Spain and Germany. In contrast, Poland, Sweden and Ireland, which had little previous interaction with Latin America, have developed their current relations with that region virtually as a result of their EU membership. The United Kingdom and France lie in the middle: they have been influential in certain policy-areas and key periods in history, while they have adapted to what is done at the EU level in others.
