Meaning In Action written by Rein Raud and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-05-23 with Social Science categories.

In this important new book Rein Raud develops an original theory of culture understood as a loose and internally contradictory system of texts and practices that are shared by intermittent groups of people and used by them to make sense of their life-worlds. This theory views culture simultaneously in two ways: as a world of texts, tangible and shareable products of signifying acts, and as a space of practices, repeatable activities that produce, disseminate and interpret these clusters of meaning. Both approaches are developed into corresponding models of culture which, used together, are able to provide a rich understanding of any meaning in action. In developing this innovative theory, Raud draws on a wide range of disciplines, from anthropology, sociology and cultural studies to semiotics and philosophy. The theory is illustrated throughout with examples drawn from both high and popular culture, and from Western and Asian traditions, dealing with both contemporary and historical topics. The book concludes with two case studies from very different contexts – one dealing with Italian poetry in the 13th century, the other dealing with the art scene in Eastern Europe in the 1990s. This timely and original work makes a major new contribution to the theory of culture and will be welcomed by students and scholars throughout the social sciences and humanities.

The Eight Universal Dimensions Of Culture From A Synthesis Of Cultural Taxonomies written by Sophie Kunert and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-08-29 with Business & Economics categories.

The crucial element of this book constitutes the synthesis of cultural dimensions from existing cultural taxonomies, extended by the operationalization of the eight identified Universal Dimensions of Culture (UDCs) into a questionnaire. First, an extensive Systematic Literature Review (SLR) is pursued to identify the current state of research, demonstrating the research gap on a unified approach for classifying national cultures into cultural dimensions. Eight assumptions displaying the eight UDCs are derived from the results of the SLR. Subsequently, an evaluation and selection framework for identifying the research base of comparable existing cultural taxonomies is developed. A research base of 11 cultural taxonomies and 50 cultural dimensions is retrieved. These serves as the basis for developing the eight UDCs, following a synthesis process and protocol. The eight UDCs are operationalized into a questionnaire, which is extensively pre-tested by experts and in the field. An example country study for Germany, Canada, and Brazil is conducted, and the corresponding country profiles for the eight UDCs are displayed.

Symbolist Journals written by Pamela Antonia Genova and has been published by Ashgate Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002 with Art categories.

Pamela Genova here explores in detail the journals inspired by the Symbolist movement, which she shows to represent a crucial forum for cultural exchange and for multifaceted artistic expression. She focuses on the intellectual concerns, aesthetic significance and interdisciplinary dialogue which lie at the heart of such Symbolist reviews as La Revue Indépendante, Le Décadent, La Revue Blanche and Le Mercure de France. Beginning with an examination of the evolution and development of Symbolist thought and criticism in the second half of the nineteenth century, Genova moves on to discuss the history of the Symbolist journal and its culmination in la guerre des petites revues. The latter chapters of the book centre on the relationship, often antagonistic, between poetry and two additional art forms that preoccupied Symbolist journalism: painting and music.

This Is How I Think written by Emily A. Chivers Yochim and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Masculinity in motion pictures categories.

This Is How I Think contributes to our understanding of the politics of youth consumer culture by discussing the ways in which white masculinity is presented in youth media and elaborating young men's reactions to these portrayals. Contemporary media representations of white male youth present alternative masculinities that rely on both dominant American values and the mockery of non-whites, homosexuals, and women to maintain men's power. Utilizing theories of the media audience, youth culture, race, and gender to discuss ethnographic data collected in a community of skateboarders, I contend that skate culture produces alternative modes of masculinity that are not anti-patriarchal, and thus do not disrupt normative power relations. Further, I suggest, skate culture creates a space in which young men can experience the mental and emotional pleasure of escape and self-expression---an experience often denied young men in a dominant culture that expects them to be emotionally reticent and in control.
