Emiliano Zapata comenzó una nueva existencia luego de ser asesinado el 10 de abril de 1919 en la hacienda de Chinameca. Al recorrer la trayectoria póstuma de Zapata, Samuel Brunk revela aquí los mecanismos discursivos y ceremoniales con los que el Estado ha querido apropiarse de la imagen de Zapata y nos lleva a escuchar los corridos sobre la vida y la muerte de Emiliano, a mirar con estupor las interpretaciones de Marlon Brando y Alejandro Fernández en la pantalla grande, a hojear la prensa y los libros de texto de primaria, a contemplar los murales de Diego Rivera y la pintura de Alberto Gironella, a hurgar en las biografías —tanto las denigratorias como las hagiográficas—, a viajar a Chiapas y a Estados Unidos, para entender cómo, a lo largo del siglo XX mexicano, se gestó el culto a un héroe que comparte rasgos con Jesucristo, Quetzalcóatl y otras deidades mesoamericanas. Tras leer estas páginas queda claro que, a su manera, Zapata aún está vivo.
