Written as a journal, ‘In the Mountains’ tells the story of an English woman who after WWI decides to escape her personal troubles in London and seeks refuge at her chalet in the Swiss Alps. She arrives exhausted, and as she begins to regain her strength, two English women also escaping their personal circumstances show up on her doorstep. The hostess invites them and, together, the three women embark on a strange adventure to help one another. A novel about women and escapism, ‘In the Mountains’ will be enjoyed by fans of ‘Thelma & Louise’. Elizabeth von Arnim was an English novelist – a cousin of the New Zealand-born writer Katherine Mansfield – born as Mary Annette Beauchamp in Australia in 1866. She married a German aristocrat and her earliest written works are set in Germany. Von Arnim launched her career as a writer with her satirical and semi-autobiographical work ‘Elizabeth and Her German Garden’, published anonymously in 1898. Although she was known by the name May in her early life, when she began writing, her success as ‘Elizabeth’ meant that her writings were ascribed to the name Elizabeth von Arnim.

A beautiful book on the famed Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas The Chinati Foundation, a world-famous destination for large-scale contemporary art, was founded by Donald Judd (1928-1994) to preserve and present a select number of permanent installations that were inextricably linked to the surrounding landscape in Marfa, Texas. This handsome publication, first published in 2010 and now available with a new chapter devoted to the permanent installation by Robert Irwin that was inaugurated in 2016 and a new foreword by Jenny Moore, director of the Chinati Foundation, describes how Judd developed his ideas of the role of art and museums from the early 1960s onward, culminating in the creation of Chinati. The individual installations featured here include work by John Chamberlain, Dan Flavin, David Rabinowitch, Roni Horn, Ilya Kabakov, Richard Long, Ingólfur Arnarsson, Carl Andre, Claes Oldenburg and Coosje Van Bruggen, and John Wesley, as well as by Judd himself. An international research team examines California's system of postsecondary and higher education. In particular, the examination seeks answers on how California maintains educational quality, access, and equality while working with the market and the state in developing educational solutions to political, social, and economic problems. Part 1 of the report provides analyses and questions on how the state, in practice, can manage and finance the educational requirements, particularly in the context of the future demographic composition of the state (large inflows of immigrants), that stem from the constant need for highly-qualified manpower that is demanded in a technology-based economy. A bibliography of 50 items is included. Part 2 provides a record of the review meeting within the education committee, including replies to the examiners' questions. Part 3 reproduces a summary of the background report prepared for the review by the California Postsecondary Education Commission titled "Preparing for the Twenty-First Century: A Report on Higher Education in California." The Origin Of The Idea Of Crusade written by Carl Erdmann and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-04-23 with Religion categories.

Though conditioned by the specific circumstances of eleventh-century Europe, the launching of the crusdaes presupposed a long historical evolution of the idea of Christian knighthood and holy war. Carl Erdmann developed this argument first in 1935 in a book that is still recognized as basic to an understanding of how the crusades came about. This first edition in English includes notes supplementing those of the German text, a foreword discussing subsequent scholarship, and an amplified bibliography. Paying special attention to the symbolism of banners as well as to literary evidence, the author traces the changes that moved the Western church away from its initial aversion to armed combat and toward acceptance and encouragement of the kind of holy war that the crusades would represent: a war whose specific cause was religion. Erdmann's analysis stresses the role of church reformers and Gregory VII, without neglecting the "popular" idea of crusade that would assure an astonishingly enthusiastic response to Urban II's appeal in 1095. His book provides an unrivaled account of he interaction of the church with war and warriors during the early Middle Ages. Carl Erdmann (1898-1945) taught at the University of Berlin and was associated with the Monumenta Germania historica. Marshall Baldwin was Professor Emeritus of History at New York University at his death in 1975. Walter Goffart is Professor of History at the University of Toronto. Originally published in 1978. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.
