Con aggiornamenti, modifiche e alcune assenze questo testo raccoglie gli interventi del convegno “Costruire in Terra d’Otranto tra Medioevo ed Età moderna”, che si è svolto a Lecce dall’11 al 13 luglio 2019 nella sede dell’ex Ospedale dello Spirito Santo. Gli atti si pongono come un utile contributo alla conoscenza del cantiere di Terra d’Otranto, fra lettura archeologica, artistica, architettonica e urbana. I saggi riguardano in particolare le caratteristiche del cantiere medievale di Terra d’Otranto e della sua organizzazione e con riferimento ad aspetti peculiari del linguaggio architettonico proprio di alcune costruzioni, come ad esempio la basilica di Centoporte a Giurdignano e la basilica di S. Caterina d’Alessandria a Galatina. La continuità della tradizione costruttiva, evidente nella ‘lunga durata’ della realizzazione della tecnica muraria a ‘filari isometrici’, viene articolata negli sviluppi del linguaggio architettonico proprio delle opere del cantiere moderno Cinque-Seicentesco, nei sistemi voltati fra XVI e XVII secolo e delle strutture voltate a spigolo e catini con costoloni e ancora delle volte delle chiese leccesi studiate nella loro geometria e morfometria. Completano il quadro alcuni saggi sulle finiture delle facciate delle architetture in Terra d’Otranto, sulle tecniche di intervento del XVIII secolo a seguito e a prevenzione di futuri eventi sismici nel Salento e il caso emblematico per molti degli aspetti citati del castello di Fulcignano a Galatone.

What was the real nature of medieval lordship in southern Italy? What can this region and its history bring to the great European debates on feudalism and aristocratic powers, their structures and evolution, and their social and economic impact? What contribution can the Kingdom of Sicily make to studies of the relationships between sovereigns, nobilities and peasant societies? And can the study of seigneurial powers and rural societies reshape the old arguments regarding the economic backwardness of the Mezzogiorno (the South of Italy) and the central role of its monarchy? This book offers the first systematic analysis of lordship in southern Italy in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, under the Norman, Staufen and early Angevin kings. It offers new interpretations of the powers of the nobility, and of rural societies and royal policy. It reveals the complexity of interactions between the king, nobles and peasants, and how they occurred and were expressed through laws and violence, feudal relations and economic investments, debates on freedom and serfdom, and the exploitation of people and natural resources. In these interactions a leading role is played by peasant societies - with previously unsuspected levels of dynamism - to set against that of the kings, who were determined to curb aristocratic powers, and of the nobles who were obliged to adapt their lordship in response to powerful rural societies and crown policies. What emerges is a hitherto unseen Mezzogiorno, vital and complex, whose study allows a deeper understanding not only of the affairs of the South but of many other regions of Europe.

At the beginning of the thirteenth century Byzantium was still one of the most influential states in the eastern Mediterranean, possessing two-thirds of the Balkans and almost half of Asia Minor. After the capture of Constantinople in 1204 during the Fourth Crusade, the most prominent and successful of the Greek rump states was the Empire of Nicaea, which managed to re-capture the city in 1261 and restore Byzantium. The Nicaean Empire, like Byzantium of the Komnenoi and Angeloi of the twelfth century, went on to gain dominant influence over the Seljukid Sultanate of Rum in the 1250s. However, the decline of the Seljuk power, the continuing migration of Turks from the east, and what effectively amounted to a lack of Mongol interest in western Anatolia, allowed the creation of powerful Turkish nomadic confederations in the frontier regions facing Byzantium. By 1304, the nomadic Turks had broken Byzantium's eastern defences; the Empire lost its Asian territories forever, and Constantinople became the most eastern outpost of Byzantium. At the beginning of the fourteenth century the Empire was a tiny, second-ranking Balkan state, whose lands were often disputed between the Bulgarians, the Serbs, and the Franks. Using Greek, Arabic, Persian, and Ottoman sources, Byzantium and the Turks in the Thirteenth Century presents a new interpretation of the Nicaean Empire and highlights the evidence for its wealth and power. It explains the importance of the relations between the Byzantines and the Seljuks and the Mongols, revealing how the Byzantines adapted to the new and complex situation that emerged in the second half of the thirteenth century. Finally, it turns to the Empire's Anatolian frontiers and the emergence of the Turkish confederations, the biggest challenge that the Byzantines faced in the thirteenth century.
