Le nostre città hanno un impatto drammatico sull’equilibrio ecologico del pianeta: si sgretolano sempre più in periferie diffuse che erodono il paesaggio naturale e sprecano inutilmente risorse ed energia. Per ampliarle e modernizzarle stiamo distruggendo sconsideratamente gran parte di un patrimonio edilizio che potremmo riusare. In questo piccolo manifesto del costruire sostenibile, l’architetto e studioso Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani identifica il problema degli sprechi edilizi nell’ideologia dell’usa e getta che ha contagiato le città, tracciando una storia del consumismo architettonico, svelando l’invenzione dell’obsolescenza programmata e rivisitando l’euforia modernista del provvisorio. Ma la storia dell’architettura è ricca anche di splendide lezioni di parsimonia, riuso e resilienza, che non rinunciano all’ideale dell’impegno sociale e della bellezza. Dobbiamo costruire meglio, in maniera più durevole, perché solo un edificio che dura nel tempo usa bene i mezzi che ha consumato. Dobbiamo costruire più densamente, «stringerci», perché solo una città compatta è veramente sostenibile. Ma soprattutto dobbiamo usare più assennatamente ciò che abbiamo, ridimensionare le nostre pretese e costruire meno, molto meno, quasi niente.
