Excerpt from Cover Crops for Porto Rico Any quick-growing crop which will make a thrifty top and root growth and will not, if it escapes cultivation, become a weed, may be used as a cover crop. In most localities of Porto Rico any such crop is preferable to clean cultivation. The selection of the plant will depend upon its resistance to disease and insect enemies, its vigor in seasons when desired, its habits of growth, and what it returns to the soil. Since nitrogen is an expensive fertilizer element and one which is present in comparatively small quantities in most Porto Rican soils, the choice will be from the number of leguminous plants which, in addition to the good qualities of other plants used for cover crops, have the power of storing in the soil nitrogen which they take from the atmosphere. The selection of legumes suited to the peculiar needs of the fields in which they are to be grown is of great importance in Porto Rico, as there is a great variety of soil types, a wide range of rainfall for different sections, and a great difference in the length of the growing season and habits of growth of the different plants, [which suit them to a peculiar condition. Soils devoted to horticulture here are of two general classes - the light, sandy types, and the heavy, clay loams. The surface of both is subject to drying out quickly when rainfall ceases, and should be protected from the intense sun heat throughout the long summer. Vegetable matter is needed for bind ing the sandy types, for loosening the heavy ones, and for enriching both, and. A Vigorous grower should be planted to supply it. The heavy soils are, as a rule, poorly drained and require a crop that will thrive under such conditions, while those for sandy areas must resist the short, intermittent droughts and be capable of sending out a large root system which will enable them to thrive where the fertility is low. An extensive root system is needed also to prevent surface wash ing which in every locality results from the heavy rains. Excerpt from Report of the Puerto Rico Experiment Station, 1943 There are few pests of planted, growing, and stored food crops that are more destructive in their habits or harder to control than rats. The station frequently has experienced considerable interference with the seed-production pro-gram from this source. Areas near favorable cover, such as fence rows, ditch banks, or headlands and terrace banks covered with dense grass, have produced spotty stands because rats have dug up the seed and later, in the Case of corn, eaten into the ears that developed. Excerpt from Derris Culture in Puerto Rico The growing of Derris elliptica: in Puerto Rico is described and dis cussed with some reference to cultural methods used in the Far East. The Sarawak Creeping and Changi No. 3 varieties are commercially superior to other selections of derris that have been tested. Unshaded nurseries, described in detail, have proved a practical means of rooting cuttings on a large scale. The use of rooted cuttings reduces the amount of weeding required and assures a more uniform stand of plants in the field. Simple methods of transplanting rooted cuttings and applying fertilizer are presented. Little is known of the fertilizer requirements of derris. Propagating material of commercial Size is used most efficiently at a field Spacing of 3 by 3 feet, but weeding costs are reduced by closer Spacing. Large cuttings produce plants that cover the soil more quickly and yield more roots per acre than small cuttings. Trellising the vines increased the yield of roots 75 percent and the number of cuttings 300 percent over those not trellised, but the labor requirement for trellising may be correspondingly increased. Excerpt from Report of the Puerto Rico Experiment Station, 1936 Most mango varieties possess high vegetative vigor. Although the trees present a great bulk to hurricane winds of high velocity, experience in the East Indies has shown that even when blown over they seldom die. Logical regional planning would seem to indicate that mangoes could more safely be grown in some of our steep-sided valleys where they may attain some degree of protection from hurricane winds. Producers' cooperatives seem important for such new crops. The profitable production of truck crops for winter marketing is dependent upon the most competent technical knowledge for field management as well as alert representation in the continental markets. The production of other crops has shown the necessity of increased technical knowledge. The small producers of Puerto Rico individually have not been in a position to have market representation or obtain through experience the technical knowledge necessary for successful truck-crop or other specialized production. In this situation it would seem essential to form cooperative associations in which technical men would be employed to guide production methods, packing, and ship ping, as well as provide expert market representation. Regional specialization aids dissemination of technical information and formation of cooperatives. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Report of the Puerto Rico Agricultural Experiment Station, 1933 The loss per cane due to drying out of arrowed cane tops is esti -mated to be approximately four times as great for either of these J avan varieties as for Mayaguez 28 in fields where the latter blos soms. The advantage of Mayaguez 28 over p.o.j. 2725 is often greater than this, however, since arrowing is often practically nil for Mayaguez 28 in localities where p.o.j. 2725 blossoms profusely. Due to its comparative freedom from pith or hollow centers, Mayaguez 28 canes have a high specific gravity. At Coloso and Mayaguez they proved nearly one tenth heavier than water, whereas those of p.o.j. 2725 barely equaled water in weight. The combina tion of high sucrose content and high specific gravity results in low transportation costs per ton of sugar for Mayaguez 28. This item of expense is important where canes must be hauled 10. To 15 miles. Adaptability on I sabela red clay - Trial plantings made in 1931 demonstrated the adaptability of Mayaguez 28 to the friable red clay soil of Isabela. This soil is so loose that irrigation water soon after application drains away rapidly from below. On such soil a variety having a. Strong root system, drought-resistant foliage, and ability to cover the ground rapidly is required. Mayaguez 28 met all these requirements. At Isabela its foliage proved to be very drought resistant, its root system developed rapidly and functioned well even when deprived of irrigation water, and many and broad leaves covered the ground even more rapidly than did those of p.o.j. 287 8. As a result of the favorable growth made by the trial plantings and the satisfactory sugar production in the Coloso variety trial the Isabela cane growers rapidly extended the planting of Mayaguez 28. It now occupies 600 acres and is one of the principal varieties in the Isabela district. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Battle For Paradise written by Naomi Klein and has been published by Haymarket Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-06-05 with Social Science categories.

Fearless necessary reporting . . . Klein exposes the ‘battle of utopias’ that is currently unfolding in storm-ravaged Puerto Rico” (Junot Díaz, author of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao) “We are in a fight for our lives. Hurricanes Irma and María unmasked the colonialism we face in Puerto Rico, and the inequality it fosters, creating a fierce humanitarian crisis. Now we must find a path forward to equality and sustainability, a path driven by communities, not investors. And this book explains, with careful and unbiased reporting, only the efforts of our community activists can answer the paramount question: What type of society do we want to become and who is Puerto Rico for?” —Carmen Yulín Cruz, Mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico In the rubble of Hurricane Maria, Puerto Ricans and ultrarich “Puertopians” are locked in a pitched struggle over how to remake the island. In this vital and startling investigation, bestselling author and activist Naomi Klein uncovers how the forces of shock politics and disaster capitalism seek to undermine the nation’s radical, resilient vision for a “just recovery.” All royalties from the sale of this book in English and Spanish go directly to JunteGente, a gathering of Puerto Rican organizations resisting disaster capitalism and advancing a fair and healthy recovery for their island. “Klein chronicles the extraordinary grassroots resistance by the Puerto Rican people against neoliberal privatization and Wall Street greed in the aftermath of the island’s financial meltdown, of hurricane devastation, and of Washington’s imposition of an outside control board over the most important U.S. colony.” —Juan González, cohost of Democracy Now! and author of Harvest of Empire: A History of Latinos in America
