Cox soll ihm eine Uhr bauen, wie es noch keine gegeben hat. Der Uhrmachermeister folgt dem Ruf des chinesischen Kaisers in das Reich der Mitte und will dem Herrn der zehntausend Jahre Uhren bauen. Zusammen mit Jacob Merlin und zwei weiteren Gehilfen arbeitet er dort und erlebt den Kaiserhof wie eine einzigartige fremde Märchenwelt. Der historische Roman erzählt vom Glanz des chinesischen Kaiserreiches. Er portraitiert und schildert China auf dem Höhepunkt seiner kulturellen Blüte, wo allerdings schon die ersten Einflüße westlicher Kunst und Kultur zu spüren sind. Ransmayr vermengt reale Begebenheiten des chinesischen Kaiserreiches der Quing-Dynastie mit einer fiktiven Geschichte über einen englischen Uhrmacher zu einer melancholischen Parabel auf das Wesen und den Lauf der Zeit und zugleich die Schönheit wie die Schattenseite bedingungsloser Hingabe an ein Ziel.
