Existem algumas Ruas e Praças que são muito especiais. Em todos os continentes, no hemisfério norte e no sul; no oriente e no ocidente. A sua utilização e frequência pelas populações, grupos e organizações, ou mesmo pelo próprio Estado, foram determinantes em muitos dos acontecimentos mais relevantes da vida e da história de muitos Estados, e muitas vezes com projeção geopolítica regional ou global. Nestes espaços urbanos delimitados, o algoritmo do poder foi, ou ainda é, quase sempre proeminente e muitas vezes decisivo. A incidência focalizada em algumas Ruas e Praças, relevantes num determinado espaço geográfico, conduz necessariamente a invocar a Cidade, ou seja a área urbana maior onde se inserem. Daremos conta da Lisboa do Terreiro do Paço, da Baixa e da Rotunda que deram «vida republicana» ao 5 de Outubro. Da Avenida da Liberdade que «enfeitiçada» pelo seu nome, esperou os vencedores do 28 de Maio. E claro, relembramos o Largo do Carmo que abriu a festa da liberdade para o 25 de Abril. Abordaremos algumas outras cidades do mundo, as suas Ruas e Praças do Poder, em tempos e circunstâncias diferentes, como: Petrogrado, Kiev, Buenos Aires, Caracas, Pequim, o Cairo e Argel. E claro Hong Kong. Estes espaços do poder por norma altivos, cheios de história e currículo, com a vertiginosa pandemia do novo coronavírus (covid-19), deixavam esmorecer a sua postura e procuravam, por estes tempos, o vazio. Praças e ruas sem gente e sem alma ... ... Tudo isto em jeito de crónica histórica urbana.

At the end of World War II, several Latin American countries seemed to be ready for industrialization and self-sustaining economic growth. Instead, they found that they had exchanged old forms of political and economic dependence for a new kind of dependency on the international capitalism of multinational corporations. In the much-acclaimed original Spanish edition (Dependencia y Desarrollo en América Latina) and now in the expanded and revised English version, Cardoso and Faletto offer a sophisticated analysis of the economic development of Latin America. The economic dependency of Latin America stems not merely from the domination of the world market over internal national and "enclave" economies, but also from the much more complex interact ion of economic drives, political structures, social movements, and historically conditioned alliances. While heeding the unique histories of individual nations, the authors discern four general stages in Latin America's economic development: the early outward expansion of newly independent nations, the political emergence of the middle sector, the formation of internal markets in response to population growth, and the new dependence on international markets. In a postscript for this edition, Cardoso and Faletto examine the political, social and economic changes of the past ten years in light of their original hypotheses.

A total institution is defined by Goffman as a place of residence and work where a large number of like-situated, individuals, cut off from the wider society for an appreciable period of time, together lead an enclosed, formally administered round of life. Prisons serve as a clear example, providing we appreciate that what is prison-like about prisons is found in institutions whose members have broken no laws. This volume deals with total institutions in general and, mental hospitals, in particular. The main focus is, on the world of the inmate, not the world of the staff. A chief concern is to develop a sociological version of the structure of the self. Each of the essays in this book were intended to focus on the same issue--the inmate's situation in an institutional context. Each chapter approaches the central issue from a different vantage point, each introduction drawing upon a different source in sociology and having little direct relation to the other chapters. This method of presenting material may be irksome, but it allows the reader to pursue the main theme of each paper analytically and comparatively past the point that would be allowable in chapters of an integrated book. If sociological concepts are to be treated with affection, each must be traced back to where it best applies, followed from there wherever it seems to lead, and pressed to disclose the rest of its family.
