El trabajo de Gilles Bataillon acerca de la guerra civil que vivió la Moskitia nicaragüense entre 1981 y 1989 plantea una serie de preguntas fundamentales para la antropología política. ¿De qué manera se describe y se entiende una guerra civil en ausencia de archivos, cuando los principales actores del conflicto son, además, personajes políticos de primer orden? ¿Desde qué posición es posible interrogar a un testigo de hechos históricos recientes ? ¿Hasta qué punto estos testigos están dispuestos a hablar de su experiencia y a qué tipo de reglas obedecen sus relatos? A partir de un largo trabajo de campo en la región iniciado en 1984, el autor examina las percepciones de actores y observadores en el momento en que estuvieron implicados en la guerra civil, y plantea que ésta favoreció un tipo de discurso que no admitió la reflexión individual. Las entrevistas realizadas a los combatientes y sus allegados —cien personas entre 1997 y 2007— permiten diferenciar lo accidental del proceso histórico que condujo a algunos individuos a comprometerse en la guerra civil. Se observa también la manera en que el trabajo de rememoración en torno a la guerra se alimentó de la tradición del -pietismo moravo, religión a la cual los miskitus se convirtieron desde -comienzos del siglo XX. Los relatos miskitus de la guerra en los años ochenta muestran la manera en que el pluralismo protestante fue asumido por ellos.

The Sandinista Revolution and its victory against the Somoza dictatorship in Nicaragua gripped the United States and the world in the 1980s. But as soon as the Sandinistas were voted out of power in 1990 and the Iran Contra affair ceased to make headlines, it became, in Washington at least, a thing of the past. Mateo Jarquin recenters the revolution as a major episode in the history of Latin America, the international left, and the Cold War. Drawing on research in Nicaragua, Cuba, Mexico, Panama, and Costa Rica, he recreates the perspective of Sandinista leaders in Managua and argues that their revolutionary project must be understood in international context. Because struggles over the Revolution unfolded transnationally, the Nicaraguan drama had lasting consequences for Latin American politics at a critical juncture. It also reverberated in Western Europe, among socialists worldwide, and beyond, illuminating global dynamics like the spread of democracy and the demise of a bipolar world dominated by two superpowers.
