[Abstract] My interest in the interconnections between creativity and the artist and creativity and the psychotherapist resulted in the research question as follows: What is the experience of the creative process in the careers of artists and psychotherapists? A heuristic research model is most appropriate for this study. This model consists of four basic stages. Immersion, the first stage, is characterized by an absorption in the question at hand. The second stage of incubation allows understanding to grow within the researcher. Illumination is the third stage where one gains a complete picture of the experience. The final stage of verification allows for clarification, elaboration and correction. In addition to myself, four artists and four psychotherapists comprise the research participants. Data has been obtained through tape recorded, open ended interviews. Two of these interviews were fully transcribed. From the remaining six, extensive notes were made. The data revealed the following ten themes: anticipation, fear, expansion, struggle, risking, intuition, involvement in the world, connection, physical sensations, and completion. The relevant literature points out four basic stages in the creative process. The first stage of preparation consists of gathering information. The second stage of incubation is characterized by non-rational thinking processes. Illumination, the third stage chiefly consists of an awareness of new possibilities. The final stage of verification is the evaluation of new perceptions and ideas. This study has clinical, educational and societal implications. The research suggests that the creative process may be taught; however, the elements of risk, fear and struggle must be considered.
