This retrospective monograph on work of Jan and Helga Grove accompanies the most extensive exhibition ever held, and features works made from 1953 to 2005, shortly before they retired. Born in Germany, both Jan and Helga Grove trained and worked there in the late 1940's and 1950¿s, before moving to Canada. From 1966 to 2009 they operated studios in Colwood, and later in Metchosin (British Columbia) where they produced pottery with bright colours and matte glazes, often decorated with geometric and abstract designs. Their work was exhibited at Expo '67 and other national exhibitions and sold across the country. Also featured are several experimental pieces highlighting Jan's modernist forms and glazes and Helga's unique geometric and fable animal decorations. For over 40 years, they also produced clay sculptures assembled from wheel-thrown and hand formed parts. Often whimsical and thought-provoking commentaries on human existence, the sculptures are at once a synthesis of unique artistic expression and advanced technical skill. The publication contains photographs, artwork, and other historical material documenting the work and lives of these extraordinary artists.

Excerpt from Clay in the Classroom: A Means to Creative Expression Clay is found practically everywhere. Unless one lives on a beach or in a desert, clay in one's backyard, under the topsoil, is probable and its quality doubtlessly would be such that it could be used for pottery. Large, commercially valuable deposits of clay are found in Ohio, Tennessee, Florida, Illinois and California, among others. Many clays can be used singly, before or after washing, screening and stiffening, to make pottery. Others, which may not, individually, provide the particular qualities desired as to fired color, temperature and workability, can be combined with other clays and inorganic materials to form clay bodies. The clay from which porcelain dinnerware, for example, is made is not a single clay but a body compounded of a white clay, for color; a very plastic clay, for workability; a flux, for fired density; and silica, for fixed hardness and glaze fit. The mineral, clay, is formed by the gradual erosion of rocks over periods of thousands of years. Water washes the disintegrated rock, altering both its chemical and physical properties and carries it over the surface of the earth. Clays are frequently found, therefore, along stream or river beds. Some clay deposits, how ever, are hundreds of feet underground, having been formed at a time when those areas were exposed. Clay is composed of aluminum and silicon oxides, water and, often, impuri ties such as iron oxide. The physical properties of clays vary, determined in great part. By the extent of their individual travels over the earth's surface. The longer the trip, the finer the degree to which the particles are worn down, the greater the deterioration of organic matter mixed with the clay and the more plastic the clay. Abstract: Ruth Duckworth and Grayson Perry approach clay as a material for creative expression from different perspectives that are firmly located within their individual subjectivities, temporalities, spatial practices and in the wider cultural and socio-political contexts in which their works and methodologies are situated. In this essay Duckworth and Perry bear the burden of representation of being female and male, respectively, and in this respect their artworks reflect their individual responses to gender distinctions. Duckworth explores issues of sex and gender somewhat obliquely by comparison to Perry who takes a strident approach to what he perceives as a form of discrimination against men through their cultural representation as a result of British society's expectations of masculinity. Perry expresses concepts of gender distinction and transformation through his embrace of transvestism as a way of life combined with heterosexual marriage, and in his work, writings and broadcasts in the media. Duckworth is largely silent and leads a more self-contained private life so that understanding her response to gender can only be a matter of interpretation from her ceramic practice. The juxtaposition of these two artists provides an opportunity to consider how they each address gender through their work. This comparison also reveals some of the ways that the application of social and cultural interpretations of and responses to sex and gender contributes to a perception of Duckworth and Perry as sharing a degree of outsider status. Neither can be said to be purely an outsider artist yet their use of clay as a means of artistic expression inevitably leads to an association with the divisions and hierarchies within the art world involving art/craft and nature/culture binaries that are intimately connected to sex and gender debates alongside a consideration of primitivism, modernity and post-modernity. These debates have relevance for a discussion of ceramic craft practice in contemporary Hong Kong and this dissertation draws attention to some of the issues facing the author who is also a practicing ceramic artist. The main focus of this essay is to reflect on the work, and to a lesser extent the lives, of Duckworth and Perry and more briefly Asger Jorn and Isamu Noguchi, whilst drawing some comparisons to the life of a practicing artist in Hong Kong who also works with clay, is female and originates from a different place from the one in which she currently lives and works. From pottery to story to carnivals, various forms of artistic expression from the Americas can be shown to reflect universal human imagery and creativity. In this collection, contributors from a variety of disciplines utilize an ethnoaesthetic perspective to place art forms within their cultural and social milieus, and address the problem of understanding culturally patterned creative expressions caught up in organized art worlds. The book presents an array of contemporary and ancient arts of North, Central, and South America and the Caribbean, ranging from the cultural heritage of the Central Andes and Mesoamerica to contemporary peoples who share a legacy of colonial domination - such as Native American artists of Canada and the American Southwest, the Saramaka Maroons of Suriname, Trinidadian Carnival designers, and the Canelos Quichua of Amazonian Ecuador. Approaches used by the authors include a general survey of the arts of a region, an intensive study of the aesthetic genres and styles of a culture, an examination of the historical and ethnohistorical features of artistic and cultural hegemony, and a reconstruction of life histories in cultural context.
