This commemorative volume comprises ten essays which celebrate the work of Walter (Bill) Nash. Bill Nash was an extraordinary scholar – a classicist, parodist, critic, musician, linguist, poet, polyglot, humourist and novelist. He was as adroit in his reading of the Old Norse sagas as he was in his analyses of the rhetorical composition of everyday English usage, and his published outputs embrace the stylistic, rhetorical, compositional and creative topographies of both language and literature. The contributions that comprise this volume are all by well-known scholars in the field and each essay celebrates Nash’s prodigious offering by covering the academic fields with which he was particularly associated. These fields include composition, rhetoric, discourse analysis, English usage, comic discourse, creative writing and the stylistic exploration of literature from the Old English period to that of the present day.

The Creative Argument sets itself apart from its competitors by presenting a series of compelling works of literary nonfiction that challenge what students think they know about arguments. Each chapter begins with an engaging argument from a work of nonfiction, followed by an in-depth yet accessible analysis of a key aspect of argumentation. Suitable for both courses in argument and first-year writing, the principles and strategies outlined in the text help students become more creative and critical as rhetoricians, both inside the classroom and out.

A concern for the art of persuasion, as rhetoric was anciently defined, was a principal feature of Greek intellectual life. In this study of the complex of subjects labeled "rhetoric," the author explores rhetorical theory and practice from the fifth to the first centuries B.C. Beginning with the creative rhetoric of the pre-Socratic era, the study progresses through the time of Aristotle and the Attic orators and concludes with the ossification of rhetoric into a pedantic discipline during the Hellenistic period. Originally published in 1963. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

This study analyzes the symbiotic relationship between rhetoric and homiletics. The proposed interface between the two disciplines is metaphor. Contemporary research on metaphor in philosophy, rhetoric, sociology, and theology is employed to produce a rhetorical/metaphorical homiletics. This work attempts to return rhetoric to its traditional position as a conversation partner with homiletics. The author argues that a metaphorical, rhetorical approach to preaching is more faithful to the scriptures than the classical dependence on the canons of formal logic. The use of metaphor allows the preacher to choose the imagination over the rational paradigm as he/she creates new worlds of meaning for congregations.
