Gettysburg The Second Day written by Harry W. Pfanz and has been published by UNC Press Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-06-15 with History categories.

The second day's fighting at Gettysburg--the assault of the Army of Northern Virginia against the Army of the Potomac on 2 July 1863--was probably the critical engagement of that decisive battle and, therefore, among the most significant actions of the Civil War. Harry Pfanz, a former historian at Gettysburg National Military Park, has written a definitive account of the second day's brutal combat. He begins by introducing the men and units that were to do battle, analyzing the strategic intentions of Lee and Meade as commanders of the opposing armies, and describing the concentration of forces in the area around Gettysburg. He then examines the development of tactical plans and the deployment of troops for the approaching battle. But the emphasis is on the fighting itself. Pfanz provides a thorough account of the Confederates' smashing assaults -- at Devil's Den and Litle Round Top, through the Wheatfield and the Peach Orchard, and against the Union center at Cemetery Ridge. He also details the Union defense that eventually succeeded in beating back these assaults, depriving Lee's gallant army of victory. Pfanz analyzes decisions and events that have sparked debate for more than a century. In particular he discusses factors underlying the Meade-Sickles controversy and the questions about Longstreet's delay in attacking the Union left. The narrative is also enhanced by thirteen superb maps, more than eighty illustrations, brief portraits of the leading commanders, and observations on artillery, weapons, and tactics that will be of help even to knowledgeable readers. Gettysburg--The Second Day is certain to become a Civil War classic. What makes the work so authoritative is Pfanz' mastery of the Gettysburg literature and his unparalleled knowledge of the ground on which the fighting occurred. His sources include the Official Records, regimental histories and personal reminiscences from soldiers North and South, personal papers and diaries, newspaper files, and last -- but assuredly not least -- the Gettysburg battlefield. Pfanz's career in the National Park Service included a ten-year assignment as a park historian at Gettysburg. Without doubt, he knows the terrain of the battle as well as he knows the battle itself.

The army marine field is a little known part of the army by both the civilians and the many soldiers. People think of the combat arms (infantry, armor, and artillery) and while they are the heart of the army, there are other branches without which the combat arms would cease to be an effective fighting force. Arguably, the most important element ensuring that the combat arms have beans and bullets is the Transportation Corps. The motto of the Transportation Corps is Spearhead of Logistics because Nothing happens until something moves. In my years as an army mariner, I have had many interesting and sometimes humorous experiences. My experiences are nothing compared with those of other army mariners. This book is not just about my experiences, but of other sea-going sailors as well. Some of the stories are hilarious, and I believe all are interesting. The book is divided into three elements. The heart of the book is the Sea Tales, but Mr. Richard Killblane, the Army Transportation Corps historian graciously provided me with many fascinating interviews of army mariners conducted by personnel in his office. The histories of many army watercraft companies are the final elements of the book and provides the reader with the differences of watercraft units and their missions. I have found my own experience to be very interesting and rewarding. I recall one day working on the engine room logbook, sitting at the galley table and glancing out of the door at the water in Skiffs Creek and thinking of how fortunate I was to be sitting there and not working in an office. I have had a wide variety of duties in my twenty-two year career, but nothing compares with working on the water. I can relate to what Samuel Clemmons wrote in his book, Life on the Mississippi, For I loved the profession far better than any I have followed since. I feel that says it all. I am now retired, but I have the memories of my experiences.

Though science fiction certainly existed prior to the surge of television in the 1950s, the genre quickly established roots in the new medium and flourished in subsequent decades. In Channeling the Future: Essays on Science Fiction and Fantasy Television, Lincoln Geraghty has assembled a collection of essays that focuses on the disparate visions of the past, present, and future offered by science fiction and fantasy television since the 1950s and that continue into the present day. These essays not only shine new light on often overlooked and forgotten series but also examine the 'look' of science fiction and fantasy television, determining how iconography, location and landscape, special effects, set design, props, and costumes contribute to the creation of future and alternate worlds. Contributors to this volume analyze such classic programs as The Twilight Zone, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, and The Man from U.N.C.L.E., as well as contemporary programs, including Star Trek: The Next Generation, Angel, Firefly, Futurama, and the new Battlestar Galactica. These essays provide a much needed look at how science fiction television has had a significant impact on history, culture, and society for the last sixty years.

The amazing story behind the greatest newspapermen to ever live—Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst—lies primarily hidden with their reporters who were in the field. They risked their lives in Cuba as the country grappled for independence simply to “get the story” and write what were not always the most accurate accounts, but were definitely the best—anything to sell papers. Reporters like Harry Scovel, Stephen Crane, Cora Taylor, Richard Harding Davis, and James Creelman, among others, put themselves in danger every day just for the news. The Yellow Kids is an adventure story packed with engaging characters, witticisms, humor, and adversity, to reveal that the “yellow” found in journalism was often an extra ingredient applied by editors and publishers in New York.
