South American camelids (Llamas, Alpacas, Vicuñas and Guanacos) are receiving increased interest not only in South America but also on a worldwide scale. They possess some unique features such as their fine fibre and healthy meat, and their high adaptivity to many climatic regions across the world. Apart from the important productive aspects, their physical attractiveness and friendly temperament also makes them popular as pet animals. There are still many gaps in the scientific literature with regard to South American camelids. In part, this gap can be diminished by this collection of papers which brings the experience of both European and South American researchers working together. The main themes considered in this book are the following: nutrition and feeding, meat production and the meat market, ecology, fibre production and the fibre market, animal breeding, animal health and pathology and socio-economical aspects. The particular advantages of South American camelids for the sustainable use of fragile ecosystems with native pastures are also outlined. 'South American camelids research' is aimed at scientists and animal breeders as well as students studying veterinary, animal and applied biological sciences. El comienzo de la vida, en cualquier especie animal, plantea desafíos significativos en diversas dimensiones, como lo son las físicas, nutricionales, inmunológicas, bioquímicas, neuronales y endócrinas. En todas estas áreas, la capacidad de adaptación al entorno se convierte en el factor central. La adaptación de la respuesta del sistema inmunitario a las amenazas microbiológicas se presenta como un hecho vital. Cuando un ser recién nacido pasa de un entorno biológicamente estéril (vida intrauterina) a un medio ambiente con múltiples amenazas de agentes infecciosos, se enfrenta a un cambio significativo. Aunque, desde una perspectiva biológica, el recién nacido cuenta con todas las estructuras necesarias para una respuesta inmunitaria adecuada y protectora, carece de experiencia antigénica. Por lo tanto, requiere de la "asistencia" de la respuesta inmunitaria materna para garantizar la viabilidad y el futuro desarrollo del neonato. El presente libro resalta la importancia del binomio "madre-cría" como un factor crítico para asegurar la respuesta inmunitaria humoral específica del recién nacido. Comprender este concepto implica analizar las estructuras biológicas involucradas en este binomio, tales como la placenta, el calostro, la Inmunoglobulina G y la respuesta de anticuerpos. En este trabajo, se exponen las diferencias en estas estructuras críticas entre las especies estudiadas, que incluyen equinos, caprinos y camélidos, junto con la dinámica de transferencia de IgG y anticuerpos a través de diversos modelos experimentales. Finalmente, se presenta un modelo analítico que facilita la comparación entre las especies animales estudiadas. Este exhaustivo estudio de la respuesta inmunitaria humoral en el binomio "madre-cría" ha permitido a la autora obtener el título de doctora en Ciencias Agropecuarias, aportando un valioso conocimiento científico sobre la adaptación en la respuesta defensiva humoral, un evento crítico para la preservación de la vida.
