O objetivo deste estudo foi compreender o que os pais que submetem seus filhos à algum tipo de violência pensam, sabem, fazem e argumentam acerca da imposição dos castigos físicos à criança no ambiente familiar, identificando quais são suas motivações ao castigarem seus filhos. Além disso, verificar se havia (ou há) alguma relação entre a violência sofrida na sua infância e as punições as quais submetem seus filhos, bem como analisar os reflexos dos castigos corporais contra a criança. A metodologia utilizada para obtenção dos dados foi um estudo de caso realizado com uma família, residente no distrito de Capão Redondo, que utiliza métodos coercitivos violentos para com as crianças. Foi elaborada uma entrevista semi-estruturada, propondo um resgate do histórico familiar dos agressores, principalmente relacionado aos métodos punitivos aos quais foram submetidos na infância. Para as crianças vítimas de violência doméstica foi estabelecido um diálogo pautado em uma entrevista semi-estruturada, focada em indagações relacionadas aos motivos, à maneira e a freqüência com que são castigados pelos seus pais, buscando, também, seus relatos referentes aos sentimentos que lhes cercam quando são punidos. Os resultados, a partir da análise dos relatos dos adultos (agressores) e das crianças acometidas de violência doméstica, apontam para a existência de uma cultura recorrente em relação à necessidade da imposição de castigos corporais para com as crianças, de modo a impor a autoridade patriarcal e induzir a criança a seguir as ordens do adulto. Esses castigos são reproduções dos costumes familiares para educação da criança, funcionando como espécie de resposta imediata e automática à ação da criança que desagrada o adulto. Esta reprodução forma um circulo de violência e faz com que a situação perdure durante gerações e seja vista de forma naturalizada.

This book presents the method developed by Dr. Silvia Helena Koller and her students and collaborators to apply Urie Bronfenbrenner’s Bioecological Theory of Human Development to empirical studies with children and adolescents. Although Bronfenbrenner's theory, in different stages of development, has been widely cited by several researchers, surprisingly little has been written about the theory itself, its evolution or about the methods that should be used to test it. This book fills this gap by presenting both an overview of Bronfenbrenner’s theory and a method to apply it to empirical research, the Ecological Engagement method.
