Standards designed for adoption at the state and local levels for the purpose of preventing and reducing organized crime in America are presented in this comprehensive report. The standards recommended in this report were formulated to assist all sectors of the community, as well as the agencies of state and local governments. As a unit, these standards constitute a comprehensive plan for the prevention and control of organized criminal activity in this country. Following the introductory remarks, a brief history of organized criminal activity in the united states, a description of the general characteristics of organized crime, and the results of a study of the various ways state and local governments have dealt with the problem are presented. Part 3 of this report presents standards to guide state and local governments, officials of the criminal justice system, and private citizens in the design and implementation of programs to combat organized criminal operations. These standards are based on successful models operating in the states or on concepts that the task force and the national advisory committee considered necessary for effective prevention and control of organized crime. Proposals for state and local administrative and regulatory agencies to participate in organized crime control programs to the fullest extent of their statutory authority are contained in chapter 4. The standards in chapters 5 through 8 recommend specific policies, law enforcement mechanisms, prosecutorial tools, and legal procedures for adoption by the criminal justice system. The standards in chapter 9 recommend that appropriate training programs in organized crime control be instituted for all levels of the criminal justice system. General educational programs for the private sector are also recommended.

The stated values of criminologists, policy makers, and researchers don't always correspond with their responses to crime. This collection parses the many different “sides” these professionals take on issues relating to victims and offenders, punishment and protection, and rights and responsibilities. Drawing on empirical research, crime theory, and criminal justice practice, the contributors explore such topics as the dynamics of race, gender, and age; the workings of the criminal justice system; the ethics of research; and current debates about new criminological issues such as the green movement and Islamophobia.

Law and society scholars challenge the common belief that law is simply a neutral tool by which society sets standards and resolves disputes. Decades of research shows how much the nature of communities, organizations, and the people inhabiting them affect how law works. Just as much, law shapes beliefs, behaviors, and wider social structures, but the connections are much more nuancedOCoand surprisingOCothan many expect. Law and Society Reader II provides readers an accessible overview to the breadth of recent developments in this research tradition, bringing to life the developments in this dynamic field. Following up a first Law and Society Reader published in 1995, editors Erik W. Larson and Patrick D. Schmidt have compiled excerpts of 43 illuminating articles published since 1993 in The Law & Society Review, the flagship journal of the Law and Society Association. By its organization and approach, this volume enables readers to join in discussing the key ideas of law and society research. The selections highlight the core insights and developments in this research tradition, making these works indispensable for those exploring the field and ideal for classroom use. Across six concisely-introduced sections, this volume analyzes inequality, lawyering, the relation between law and organizations, and the place of law in relation to other social institutions."

Crime Inequality And Power written by Eileen B. Leonard and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-04-10 with Social Science categories.

Crime, Inequality and Power challenges the dominant definitions of crime and the criminal through its uniquely comparative approach. In this book Eileen Leonard analyzes multiple forms of criminal behavior in the United States, including violence, sexual assault, theft, and drug law violations, whilst also asking readers to consider the parallels between crimes that are rarely thought comparable. Leonard’s juxtaposition of familiar street crimes, such as car theft, alongside large-scale corporate theft, vividly exposes profound inequalities in the way crime is defined, and the treatment it receives within the criminal justice system. Leonard’s analysis also reveals the underlying inequalities of race, class, and gender which enable the perpetuation of such crimes, as well as calling into question the reality of fundamental American ideals of fairness and equal justice. Moreover, the book questions whether current policies that punish street crime excessively while minimizing the crimes of the powerful, fail to keep the public safe. A broader consideration of crime, and the inequalities that underlie it, offers a fresh opportunity to rethink public policies and enduring issues of crime and criminal justice. Challenging the many persistent inequalities in the perception of and response to crime, this critique of American crime and punishment will be of interest to undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as scholars, in the fields of criminology, sociology and law.
