Um personagem tão complexo como Cristóvão Colombo não é fácil de ser compreendido e, mesmo entre os maiores especialistas do tema, nem sempre impera o consenso, como bem ressaltado pelo autor. O expressivo volume de escritos autógrafos deixados pelo navegador e felizmente preservados principalmente por seu filho Fernando Colombo, que juntamente com Bartolomé de Las Casas são os primeiros biógrafos do Almirante do Mar Oceano, muitas vezes trazem mais perguntas do que respostas. A análise conduzida pelo autor da historiografia colombina, sob a perspectiva das teorias da escrita da história, é uma excelente contribuição da pesquisa e que me parece inédita em trabalhos que tive a oportunidade de avaliar e orientar. Tem minha total concordância sua visão de que "as teorias da escrita da história nos convidam a uma maior consideração do elemento narrativo e da possibilidade de que a objetividade da historiografia a qualquer momento pode se valer da subjetividade quando esta for necessária para servir de ponte para o outro lado da história que a ciência não consegue alcançar sozinha". Enfim, o público brasileiro, tanto acadêmico como aquele aficionado por textos históricos, terá neste livro um conteúdo completo amparado nas principais fontes primárias e em um referencial bibliográfico impecável.
