A discussão proposta no presente livro parte de quatro obras escritas por dois teólogos do cristianismo no Brasil. Duas obras foram chanceladas por Leonel Franca (A Igreja, a Reforma e a Civilização e A psicologia da fé) e outras duas assinadas por Eduardo Carlos Pereira (O Protestantismo é uma nullidade e O problema religioso da América Latina), todas publicadas entre os anos de 1896 e 1934. A partir das investigações realizadas e da análise empreendida, o presente livro traz à lume as concepções que os religiosos possuíam sobre o psiquismo humano (presente nas menções às emoções, à razão, à fé e à consciência, dentre outras) e sobre a cultura humana (atravessada, por exemplo, pelas ideias de raças humanas, evolução, civilização e prosperidade). Ao mesmo tempo, a análise histórica presente no livro traz os marcos de um frutífero diálogo com pensadores de variadas áreas das ciências humanas, os quais contribuem com sólido aparato teórico e metodológico, embasando não apenas os conceitos como também as conclusões apresentadas no livro que agora é publicado.Trata-se, claramente, de uma obra de viés histórico, enriquecido pelo ingresso das discussões teológico-religiosas e científico-psicológicas condizentes com os debates que foram resgatados.
