This groundbreaking volume of critical essays about popular entertainments brings together the work of eighteen established, emerging, and independent scholars with backgrounds in Archives, Theatre and Performance, Music, and Historical Studies, currently working across five continents. The first of its kind to examine popular entertainments from a global and multi-disciplinary perspective, this collection examines a broad cross-section of historical and contemporary popular entertainment forms from Australia, England, Japan, North America, and South Africa, and considers their social, cultural and political significance. Despite the vibrant, complex, and ubiquitous nature of popular entertainments, the field has suffered from a lack of sustained academic attention. Nevertheless, popular entertainments have a global reach and a transnational significance at odds with the fact that the meaning and definition of both ‘popular’ and ‘entertainment’ remain widely contested. Since the late-nineteenth century, class-based prejudices in Western culture have championed the superiority of art and literature over the dubious and fleeting pleasures of ‘entertainment.’ Similarly, the term ‘popular’ has carried pejorative connotations, indicating something common and outside the conventional and highbrow productions of the purpose-built theatre house or concert hall. Irrespective of whether ‘popular’ is code for a cultural product with a folk origin, or a term indicating the mass appeal of a cultural product, this volume’s re-assessment of popular entertainments from a global perspective is timely. The performance research embodied in this volume was first discussed at A World of Popular Entertainments International Conference (University of Newcastle, Australia, 2009) in response to a multi-disciplinary call for scholars to explore a variety of topics relevant to the study of popular entertainments.

Victorian Epic Burlesques written by Rachel Bryant Davies and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-10-04 with History categories.

This anthology presents annotated scripts of four major burlesques by key playwrights: Melodrama Mad! or, the Siege of Troy by Thomas John Dibdin (1819); Telemachus; or, the Island of Calypso by J.R. Planché (1834); The Iliad; or, the Siege of Troy by Robert Brough (1858) and Ulysses; or the Ironclad Warriors and the Little Tug of War by F.C. Burnand (1865). Beloved legend, archaeological riddle and educational staple: Homer's epic tales of the Trojan War and its aftermath were vividly reimagined in nineteenth-century Britain. Classical burlesques-exceptionally successful theatrical entertainments-continually mined the Iliad and Odyssey to lucrative comic effect. Burlesques combined song, dance and slapstick comedy with an eclectic kaleidoscope of topical allusions. From namedropping boxing legends to recasting Shakespearean combats, epic adaptations overflow with satirical commentary on politics, cultural highlights and everyday current affairs. In uncovering Homer's irreverently playful afterlife, this selection showcases burlesque's development and wide appeal. The critical introduction analyses how these plays contested the accessibility of classical antiquity and dramatic performance. Textual and literary annotations, with contemporary illustrations, illuminate the juxtaposed sources to establish these repackaged epics as indispensable tools for unlocking nineteenth-century social, cultural and political history. Resources for further study are available online.

Despite television's popularity and prevalence, or perhaps because of it, television is not taken seriously by most people. Although it is the central storyteller of our culture, television is rarely examined critically by those who regularly consume its tales. This book disassembles, describes, and thus, demystifies television. When we know what comprises the television industry, how and why the industry operates, how television programs are made, and what strategies are used to attract and maintain audiences, we become viewers more capable of making purposeful viewing selections. When we examine the television production process, explore the components and qualities that constitute entertainment genre, and trace the history and evolution of these genre, we become viewers more appreciative of the art, craft, and science of programming and program scheduling. When we examine why and how we watch television, we become more aware of television as a social and cultural force unmatched by any medium before it. This book helps us to become more acute consumers -- a critical mass audience. Reaching a Critical Mass: * develops a governing theoretical perspective that encompasses the various literary approaches to television text and serves as the central narrative and theme of the book; * generates a working knowledge of the television industry and its dynamics, television producers and the production process, and the history and evolution of the most popular genres; * systematically and creatively explores television programming using narrative, timeless examples, and case studies; and * takes television seriously and strives to generate a more critical and knowledgeable consumer of popular TV fare.
