Bedingt von vielen Umständen wie zum Beispiel der Darstellung von Behandlungsfehlern in den Medien und den sich anschließenden Folgen wird die Thematik des Risikomanagements in Kliniken und Krankenhäusern verstärkt aufgegriffen. Ein Instrument zur Identifikation von Zwischenfällen in der Versorgung von Patienten ist das Critical Incident Reporting System (CIRS), das bereits von vielen Krankenhäusern genutzt wird. Inwiefern CIRS ein geeignetes Mittel zur Risikoidentifikation ist und welche Chancen es bietet, wird im vorliegenden Buch untersucht. Der Risikomanagementprozess wird näher erläutert und die betriebswirtschaftlichen und rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen des Risikomanagements erörtert. Aus den Ergebnissen heraus erfolgt im Anschluss eine Empfehlung zur Umsetzung des CIRS im Risikomanagement.

Die Versorgung von Patienten war jedoch, wie jede andere Disziplin, nie frei von Fehlern, vielmehr gingen diese von den frühesten Anfängen an mit ihr einher (vgl. Imhof 2010, S. 9). Diese Umstände bedingen, dass die Thematik des Risikomanagements auch in den Kliniken aufgegriffen wurde (vgl. Holzer u.a. 2005, S. 11). Ein Instrument zur Identifikation von Risiken ist zum Beispiel das Critical Incident Reporting System (CIRS). Mittels des CIRS sollen Beinahezwischenfälle gemeldet werden, im Zuge derer es zu Schäden am Patienten hätte kommen können (vgl. Ertl-Wagner 2009, S. 152). Viele Krankenhäuser nutzen bereits das CIRS, um mögliche Risiken zu identifizieren.
