In Political Theology on Edge, the discourse of political theology is seen as situated on an edge—that is, on the edge of a world that is grappling with global warming, a brutal form of neoliberal capitalism, protests against racism and police brutality, and the COVID-19 pandemic. This edge is also a form of eschatology that forces us to imagine new ways of being religious and political in our cohabitation of a fragile and shared planet. Each of the essays in this volume attends to how climate change and our ecological crises intersect and interact with more traditional themes of political theology. At present in European and American civil society a new paradigm of doing not only philosophy, psychology and sociology, but also religiology and theology is emerging: communicative action. A new communicative political theology, including a critical religiology, is arising. Its central theme is the theodicy problem. The present study approaches this theme in the framework of a critical religiology and communicative political theology narratively as well as discoursively. In search for a solution to the theodicy problem, we explore with the help of critical theorists from M. Horkheimer over W. Benjamin and Th. W. Adorno to J. Habermas and of political theologians from J. B. Metz over H. Peukert to E. Arens the philosophical and theological constellation of justice, love, freedom and reconciliation. This study follows the dialectical method: determinate negation - affirmation through negation of negation.

The political theology of the future, Carl Raschke argues, must draw on a powerful, hidden impetus—the "force of God"—to frame a new value economy. It must also embrace a radical, "faith-based" revolutionary style of theory that reconceives the power of the "theological" in political thought and action. Raschke ties democracy's retreat to the West's failure to confront its decadence and mobilize its vast spiritual resources. Worsening debt, rising unemployment, and gross income inequality have led to a crisis in political representation and values that twentieth-century theorists never anticipated. Drawing on the thought of Hegel and Nietzsche as well as recent work by Michel Foucault, Jacques Derrida, Jean-Joseph Goux, Giorgio Agamben, and Alain Badiou, among others, Raschke recasts political theology for a new generation.
