Per vent'anni Benedetto Croce fu l'unica voce libera del nostro Paese. Con un taglio originale, questo libro, oltre a seguire l'atteggiamento di Croce dinanzi al fascismo – accolto con simpatia, poi combattuto con tenacia e inventiva –, ricostruisce non soltanto la biografia del filosofo nel ventennio più tormentato del Novecento, ma ricollega lo studioso liberale ai protagonisti della cultura italiana ed europea, da Thomas Mann a Stefan Zweig. Con una ricca documentazione inedita, Franzinelli illustra l'offensiva degli squadristi e la 'macchina del fango' scatenata contro il filosofo dissidente, la sua rete di corrispondenti e le schedature poliziesche di chiunque lo frequentasse o gli scrivesse. Emerge il ruolo di Croce nella formazione di giovani che – da Giorgio Amendola a Vittorio Foa, da Leone Ginzburg a Piero Gobetti – lo presero quale riferimento in momenti decisivi della loro esistenza. Una particolare attenzione è dedicata alla battaglia di Croce contro il razzismo: era nota la sua contrarietà alla persecuzione degli ebrei, ma ora emergono la continuità e la profondità del suo impegno, che non trova pari in nessun altro intellettuale italiano.

Il cuore di questo libro è il rapporto tra intellettuali e potere. Se c’è stata un’egemonia culturale della sinistra, raramente si sente parlare dell’egemonia culturale di destra che ha dominato il Paese nel ventennio fascista. I più grandi intellettuali di allora furono fascisti, non per paura del manganello o di ritorsioni ma per assoluta convinzione politica e morale, come si può leggere limpidamente in queste pagine. «Dobbiamo abbandonare una vecchia immagine del fascismo come fenomeno reazionario incapace di produrre cultura» scrive Alessandra Tarquini nell’introduzione al Manifesto degli intellettuali fascisti, sottoscritto tra gli altri da Ungaretti, Pirandello, Malaparte, Marinetti, e il cui autore, Giovanni Gentile (che resterà fascista fino alla morte, nel 1944, ucciso dai partigiani dei Gap), è uno dei massimi filosofi italiani del Novecento. During the early decades of the twentieth century, Italy produced distinctive innovations in both the intellectual and political realms. On the one hand, Benedetto Croce (1866-1952) and Giovanni Gentile (1875-1944) spearheaded a radical rethinking of historicism and philosophical idealism that significantly reoriented Italian culture. On the other hand, the period witnessed the first rumblings of fascism. Assuming opposite sides, Gentile became the semi-official philosopher of fascism while Croce argued for a renewed liberalism based on 'absolute' historicism.
