Ramon Muntaner (1265-1336), guerrer i cronista que va servir diversos sobirans del casal de Barcelona, nascut a Peralada i ciutadà de València, fou un testimoni privilegiat dels fets esdevinguts a la Corona d?Aragó del seu temps. A la seva Crònica, sens dubte un dels exponents més notables de la historiografia europea medieval, va narrar les grans fites de l?expansió catalanoaragonesa entre els segles XIII i XIV, com ara les conquistes de Mallorca, València, Sicília i Sardenya o l?expedició de la Companyia Catalana a Bizanci. El relat de totes aquestes campanyes se?ns ofereix des d?un prisma marcadament providencialista: Muntaner veu sempre la mà divina rere els èxits militars i polítics dels prínceps del casal de Barcelona. D?altra banda, a més del valor com a document històric, la Crònica posseeix també un destacadíssim valor literari. Muntaner, a qui Josep Pla va definir com «un empordanès xerraire i mentider», s?agrada de recontar les seves històries, i ho fa amb una prosa àgil i vivaç, farcida de dites i expressions populars, però que beu igualment de les fórmules i els motius presents en les cançons de gesta i els romans d?aventures. El treball que hom té a les mans presenta una edició filològica del pròleg i els primers cent quaranta-sis capítols del text muntanerià, que comprenen els regnats de Jaume I el Conqueridor i Pere II el Gran i fan poc més o menys la meitat de tota la Crònica. L?edició, que incorpora un aparat ben copiós de notes de tipus històric, cultural, lingüístic i estilístic, a més de nombroses imatges procedents de manuscrits medievals i fotografies de llocs, edificis i objectes esmentats per Muntaner, s?acompanya, encara, d?un estudi introductori que analitza algunes de les claus literàries i historiogràfiques dels capítols esmentats.

Excerpt from Cronica Catalana de Ramon Muntaner: Texto Original y Traduccion Castellana, Acompanada de Numerosas Notas Aun cuando la potencia conocida por Corona de Aragon llevaba el titulo de una antigua soberania o reino, en cuyo territorio se hablaba el castellano, y habia estado unido, en otro tiempo, con la monarquia de Castilla; cn todo, la tal Crona debia llamarse asi por haberse constituido con la unin de aquel antiguo reino y el condad de Barcelona; de modo que la potencia federativa formada por un condado y un reino no podia tomar el primero de ests titulos sin rebajar el segundo ni podia adoptar el segundo, sin causar una confusion territorial que no agradara a los habitantes del condado. El rejimeu monarquico - federativa, pues nacido con la Corona y desarro llado con las conquistas de Mallorcay Valencia, a cada uno de cuyos paises se dio titulo de reino y ley especial, sirvio constantemente para mantener en ar monia todos los estados de Aragn, (lo que no hubiera podido ser a quererles dar una vilenta forma homogenea, ) y asi vino a resultar que, aun cuando el sobe rano usaba como principal titulo el de rey de Aragon porque era el mas eleva do, y amaba con el mismo amor e indistintamente a. Aragon y a Cataluna, no obstante, como era este estado aquel en que mas le convenia permanecer, por ser, a mas de guerrero, maritimo, y como, por otra parte, los condes - reyes no habian hecho mas en sus costumbres y habits de corte. Que perpetuar se guir lo que hicieron sus antecesores los condes de Barcelna cuya dinastia era la varonil de los naturalmente, el estado catalan fue el que vino a nte ya por ser del todo catalana la marineria de las embarcaciones que iban a las conquistas ya por ser el principe catalan y residir la corte en Barcelona ya por ser catalanas las cortas generales de todos los reinos, ya por haberse comunicado el idioma de Cataluna a los demas estados que se fueron adquiriendo y agregando a la Co rona, ya, en fin, por haberse tomado la costumbre segun atestiguan escri tres nacionales y extranjers de darse el nombre comun de catalanes todos los subdits de Aragon en las repones estrenas donde estos lucharon en busca de gloria.
