En este volumen se ofrece una panor�mica completa de las cr�nicas de Indias, estudiadas desde el punto de vista historiogr�fico y filol�gico. Esos libros escritos por los espa�oles reci�n llegados al Nuevo Mundo y a lo largo del siglo XVI recogen el profundo impacto emocional e ideol�gico ante la contemplaci�n de nuevas tierras, personas y culturas que a duras penas pod�an ser asimiladas. Bien escritas bajo par�metros humanistas, bien bajo el paraguas del estilo humilde, sus autores dejaron su testimonio, a veces l�cido, a veces superficial, de la mayor aventuras del Renacimiento espa�ol. Los cronistas tambi�n son, a la vez, exploradores, colonizadores y conquistadores. Roban tiempo a su descanso para describir maravillados, narrar emocinados y recordar melanc�licos o reivindicativos la epopeya espa�ola en Am�rica. Aqu� se analiza y valora su originalidad desde los par�metros renacentistas y su aportaci�n, no suficentemente valoradas, a las letras espa�olas.Desde Crist�bal Col�n, el primer cronista, a Hern�n Cort�s o Pedro de Valdivia, los cronistas dejaron testimonio directo, personal y transparente de sus exploraciones y conquistas, de sus intereses, obsesiones y ambiciones. Fray Bernardino de Sahag�n, fray Diego Dur�n y un largo etc�tera son los fundadores de la etnograf�a americana. Realizaron un extraordinario trabajo de recopilaci�n y sistematizaci�n de las culturas precolombinas. Asimismo, aplicaron una mirada contemplativa y bondadosa sobre esas culturas, pidiendo respeto, comprensi�n y compasi�n. Su papel es, pues, muy relevante.Aqu� ofrecemos una breve bibliograf�a de los cronistas renacentistas, una interpretaci�n de sus escritos y una valoraci�n estil�stica e hist�rica de sus escritos.
