Cross Country Hit is largely the age-old story of evil conquering good, sort of, most of the time. No lunch is free; a price must be paid. Luke is by most accounts a successful freelance hit man who travels on assignments by his Agent, Stan, but he starts to weigh the cost. Luke has a home in South Carolina and a condo in Mexico. In this novella we follow his travels on a series of assignments which take him from Finger Lakes, N.Y. State, to nearby Buffalo, from there to Quebec City, Canada and on to Napa Valley, California. The novel examines the day-to-day concerns and activities of a man who kills to make a living. He is a multifaceted individual with interests which include literature, sports, scuba diving and fine food and wine. He is introspective and comes to question both his activities and his future. Because he lives a secretive existence, which prevents him from sharing with others, his humor is largely internalized and ironic. Over time he comes to question his present occupation and considers a possible romantic commitment which would require some explanation of what he had been doing for the past ten years. Luke is proficient and impersonal in his professional activities, but becomes increasingly aware of the inevitable isolation which he ultimately faces. He is no more an island than the rest of us. When love rears its head and washes up onto his shore, he is tugged and battered by the age old tide. However, his baggage weighs heavily as he seeks to break free from the path he has chosen. Because he has lived a solitary, secretive life, and 'knows where the bodies are buried', it is not so easy to 'live happily ever after'.

Wild Shot is outwardly about the external physical demands of the winter sports of Cross Country Skiing and Biathlon. Author Andy Liebner discovers that sport is not just about training and competition; it’s a metaphor for a deeper aspect of life. Sport is a quest! To rise to the top requires a heroic journey to encounter and overcome external and internal barriers, and Andy runs into far more of them than you might think possible. The barriers are relentless. But he learns that his biggest enemy is inside his head and if he masters his fears then he wins. “Ever wondered what it would be like to compete at the highest levels of a sport? Now, image doing it without a support system of coaches, money, or a team. This is Andy Liebner’s story of how a young guy with a big dream decided to go it on his own against the biggest stars on the skiing and biathlon world circuit. While biathlon is not a sport most Americans recognize, the Europeans pour money into training facilities, gear and athlete development. With none of these advantages Andy sets out to train himself and take it to the Europeans on their home turf. His inspiration is both familiar and unique. While mental and physical training are key for many types of endurance sports, the shooting and skiing skills of Biathlon are special. The competitions are bare-knuckle shoot outs in some of the toughest weather and high mountain terrain. Andy’s journey is not an easy one and the challenges off the course often seem bigger than those encountered in competition. This exciting story couples the high speed twists and turns of a ski run with the human roller coaster of emotion.” – Janet Conway PhD.

Anyone can coach a team or individual to merely run faster. That's the easy part. Consistently achieving greater improvement than the competition is the signature of VOQ Training, embracing the continuous cycle between Cross Country and Track, with each sport building off of the other in complementary fashion. This is made possible by the sprint inspired, Volume-of-Quality principles of the Inverted Pyramid and a careful attention to preventing injuries. Combining traits of a training manual with program-building tools, plus enough back story to add personality to the workouts, there truly is something for everyone. VOQ Training is written primarily for High School and College coaches, but also for scholastic athletes seeking a maximized summer training plan. Additional suggestions are provided for tailoring the program to self-coached distance runners of all levels and racing objectives. "Dan Kaplan has hit the nail on the head with this one. VOQ Training is the product of an expert coach giving his all for individuals who seek to find training routines that really work. The Inverted Pyramid philosophy allows focused flow toward peak performance. Thanks Dan for offering years of thought and expertise! This is a must read for all." -- Dave Johnson, M.ED. Special Education, Decathlon Olympic Medalist, Corban University / Director of Athletics. "This little gem is ... both innovative and comprehensive ... I feel safe recommending VOQ to any and all trying to flesh out their library, especially those who need to inject some different perspectives into stagnant thought patterns or philosophies." -- Russ Ebbets, editor Track Coach magazine (part of Track & Field News and USATF), Winter 2012 Issue #198. "[VOQ Training] has a lot of foundation to what, when, where, how and why - more than most do." -- Kelly Sullivan, Head Cross Country and Track & Field Coach, Oregon State University. USATF Men's Distance Development Chair 1992-2004. For a preview of the full introduction, visit www.VOQTraining.com.
