King Manasseh of Judah is one of the most intriguing characters in the Bible. 2 Kings presents him as the wickedest of monarchs. In 2Kgs 24:3–4, he is accused of having provoked God to destroy Judah on account of the innocent blood he had shed in Jerusalem (cf. 2Kgs 21:16). In his study Krzysztof Kinowski investigates this accusation, viewing it against the biblical and ancient Near East backgrounds, and casts a new light upon Manasseh's role in the fall of Jerusalem. The mention of bloodshed in this affair appears to be the outcome of a process of scapegoating of Manasseh, ongoing in 2 Kings and reflecting both the legal and the cultic paradigms governing the biblical historiography. The link between Manasseh's bloodshed and the destruction of Judah on account of the cultic land's blood-defilement points towards a group of priestly scribes involved in the production of the 2Kgs 21 and 24 narratives. This assumption lies behind the scholarly discussion about the Priestly-like strata and priestly touches in the Books of Kings.

This book investigates the founding and building of cities in the ancient Near East. The creation of new cities was imagined as an ideological project or a divine intervention in the political narratives and mythologies of Near Eastern cultures, often masking the complex processes behind the social production of urban space. During the Early Iron Age (c.1200–850 BCE), Assyrian and Syro-Hittite rulers developed a highly performative official discourse that revolved around constructing cities, cultivating landscapes, building watercourses, erecting monuments and initiating public festivals. This volume combs through archaeological, epigraphic, visual, architectural and environmental evidence to tell the story of a region from the perspective of its spatial practices, landscape history and architectural technologies. Power, Politics, and Prophecy is an examination of the view of prophetic experience and prophetic institutions by the writers of Deuteronomy and the Deuteronomistic History (Joshua—2 Kings). The thesis of the book is that the Deuteronomic writers consistently hold two different and competing views on prophecy in tension: § Prophecy is a valid and true means by which God communicates the divine will and intention to people. § Prophecy is a highly ambiguous and dangerous phenomenon and, because of its essential subjective nature, should be treated with a high degree of suspicion in all cases. These views are meticulously intertwined in the narratives about the character of Samuel and both are absolutely central for the meaning of the narrative and of its portrayal of the prophet. From beginning to end, Samuel is clearly understood by the writers as fulfilling the promise of Deuteronomy 18 as the Mosaic prophet, one who serves as the primary intermediary between the divine and human realms. Yet, unlike the sympathetic readings offered by some commentators, Samuel is obviously not an unambiguously positive character.

The Light of Discovery is a Festschrift honoring Dr. Edwin Yamauchi and it focuses on the Mediterranean world. Yamauchi is Professor of History at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio where he has taught since 1969. He received his Ph.D. from Brandeis University in 1964 working under Cyrus Gordon. He teaches in the areas of ancient history, biblical archaeology, and early church history. He has authored and edited seventeen books including Greece and Babylon, Persia and the Bible, The Archaeology of New Testament Cities in Western Asia Minor, Harper's World of the New Testament, Gnostic Ethics and Mandaean Origins, and Pre-Christian Gnosticism. A coedited work, Peoples of the Old Testament World, received a prize from the Biblical Archaeological Society. He has recently edited Africa and Africans in Antiquity. His writings have been translated into a dozen languages.
