Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1,3, The FOM University of Applied Sciences, Hamburg, language: English, abstract: In the past years the number of startups increased continuously. Often it is the case that a startup doesn’t have the financial power to realize a business and if an investor or a financial institute refuses to support the startup many good ideas can fail already at the beginning. Therefore it is necessary for startups to find new ways for financing the business ideas. Crowdfunding is one method for financing and investing which nowadays reaches a high popularity and growth among innovative people, groups and companies. To get a better understanding of the whole context this term paper investigates the different perspectives and actors of crowdfunding to give an answer to the actual aim. The aim is to analyze whether crowdfunding is an appropriate way of gaining funds for startups or not. In the first part the theoretical information is provided. This includes definitions and differentiations of used basic terms like crowdfunding and crowdinvesting as well as the different forms of crowdfunding. Also in the same part the functionality and the historical development of crowdfunding will be shown. In chapter 3 the actors of crowdfunding – the startups, the investors and the platforms – will be described. This part will focus on the different reasons, aims and other important aspects for each of the actors. An overview of advantages and risks for startups and investors will be given in the fourth chapter. To have a better impression about the different crowdfunding forms, levels and scales, the fifth chapter will show some examples of successful crowdfunding campaigns. Based on all researched and derived information, the last chapter will give a summary and conclusion to the aim of this term paper.

Scientific Essay from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Offline Marketing and Online Marketing, grade: keine, , course: Wissenschaftlicher Kongress, language: English, abstract: Currently, and especially after the recent global financial crisis, it has become not easier for companies to get financial resources for their specific investments . In particular it is difficult to get conventional and traditional loans by banks to finance start ups or special and innovative projects of entrepreneurship. For this reason it is important to find new ways of financing. For this purpose, it seems useful, to modify the relatively new “Crowdfunding” mainly and so far used for financing artistic projects into an appropriate kind of corporate financing, called “CROWDINVESTING”. The following paper would theoretically develop the Crowdinvesting and encourage it to use in everyday business of SMEs . Keywords: Crowdfunding, crowdinvesting, corporate finance, credit clamp, funding, lending, SME;

Project Report from the year 2014 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, , language: English, abstract: The phenomenon of „Crowdinvesting“ – a new online means of financing for start-ups and small companies – developed in the USA and is now increasingly taking hold also in Europe and particularly in Germany. By exploiting what is known as the „collective intelligence“ of the crowd of internet users, companies seeking capital are provided with the needed funds. As a return for their monetary contribution, the so-called crowd investors are promised interests and a share in the future value of the company. Throughout 2013, only in Germany about EUR 15 million have been invested via crowdinvesting in a total of 66 business projects. This represents a 250% increase compared with the previous year 2012 . With only a few excep-tions, the projects financed so far via crowdinvesting have been mostly start-ups, mainly in the fields of E-commerce, Commerce and Creative Economy. Whether this form of financing will keep the momentum going and develop into a sustainable and viable funding source de-pends on many different factors. Among those, there is also the future attitude of the banking sector and the State towards granting credits, i.e. funds. Moreover, it remains to be seen, whether crowdinvesting can be a suitable source of funding also for already-established com-panies of the SME sector. A survey carried out by the author in 2013 revealed that the majori-ty of companies already established on the market are not familiar at all with this new online form of financing, yet show interest in it and would be willing to raise capital through this alternative funding method. Still, they would rather use it as a complementary financing com-ponent within a traditional financing mix. Crowdinvesting presents both opportunities and risks. Given the gaps in the current German regulation, companies have the possibility to raise considerably high sums via the internet . The majority of crowdinvesting platforms currently operating on the German market are start-ups themselves and their providers are mostly inex-perienced and do not hold any qualification in the field of Corporate Finance. Furthermore, the platforms’ suboptimal workflows and structures, along with a lack of compliance policies, do not offer crowd investors the necessary basis to make a safe investment decision. Given the platforms’ inadequate organizational structures and their unidirectional focus on start-ups, there is a substantial risk that the financed projects will fail already during the crowdinvesting co

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 2,1, University of applied sciences, Cologne, language: English, abstract: This thesis is based on the general problem of how and where to raise capital to achieve their defined goals. Crowdinvesting is a new method, but yet largely unexplored, possibility to do so. Especially for young and innovative companies seeking capital to kick-start their business, crowdinvesting has been labeled as a new trend. The following research focusses on the question: What are the motives, chances, and risks from a company's perspective regarding the new phenomenon of crowdinvesting? Crowdinvesting is the process where investors are approached about the financing of these young and innovative companies, but sometimes also established companies or selected projects are financed. The basic principle of crowdinvesting is that individual persons on the internet invest money in a company and in turn receive the right to participate in the success of the business. In return, the companies receive the financing amount as equity or debt capital. The thesis aims to contribute to a more detailed understanding of crowdinvesting from a theoretical and empirical perspective. Due to its innovative character, most information about crowdinvesting is at the moment based on working papers, a few specialist books, and database entries. The present thesis uses the existing literature as a core to explain the concept. To ensure a profound understanding of the topic of crowdinvesting, this thesis begins with a theoretical framework in chapter 2. The chapter describes the theory of the new institutional economics and the basics of financing, including the most common financing methods. Chapter 3 then introduces the crowd as a supporting and financing instrument for companies. In particular, the concepts of crowdsourcing, crowdfunding, and crowdinvesting are expounded and illustrated with examples. Subsequently, following the theoretical aspects, the crowdinvesting market in Germany is empirically analyzed and the financing option of crowdinvesting is critically appraised in chapter 4 to answer the research question. To conclude, the findings of the previous chapters are summarized and an outlook is given within a discussion.

Academic Paper from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Accounting and Taxes, grade: 1,7, University of applied sciences Frankfurt a. M., course: IFRS - International Finance & Accounting, language: English, abstract: A good idea for a product or service is often not enough to start a business. Especially at the beginning of starting a business financial resources are needed to invest into the necessary equipment and materials. But not only new companies, so called startups, but also small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are in need of new capital for expanding their product range or for new product developments which cannot always be obtained from the bank or from the stock market. Bank financing plays an important role in Germany. However, in 2008 about 35% of German companies complain about problems in credit financing and access to credits, especially small enterprises with an annual turnover to EUR 1 million and large enterprises of more than EUR 50 million. The decline in lending can also be seen from the fact that banks are increasingly taking more money for loan repayments from companies than to forgive new loans. This indicates that lending is difficult. Companies therefore have to seek alternative sources of funding. One of several financing alternatives is crowdfunding. This type of financing is subject to this term paper. Crowdfunding is a project-based form of financing the above mentioned case examples, by which capital from a plurality of donors within a predetermined period of time is raised.

Because of the subprime mortgage crisis in 2008, the challenges of securing necessary external capital have become more significant for young ventures. In this realm, equity crowdfunding has evolved into the most promising financing alternative for entrepreneurs and received worldwide attention. By focusing on three subsequent research questions, this book aims to contribute to the ongoing scientific discussion of equity crowdfunding. First, it reveals fruitful future research avenues by providing a systematic overview of the development of equity crowdfunding research. Second, it sheds light on the so far less explored investor perspective and analyzes the decision-making process of equity crowdfunding investors. Third, based on a multi-method approach, the questions of how equity crowdfunding investors evaluate radically innovative ventures and how radically innovative ventures can establish venture legitimacy are explored.

Scientific Essay from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra (Faculty of management and marketing ), course: ICABR2013 Congress South Africa April 2013, language: English, abstract: Der Beseitigung von Armut in den Entwicklungsländern und Schwellenländern sollte zukünftig mehr Beduetung beigemessen werden.

The research project started in 2011 and was finished in April 2014. We focussed our work on the crowdinvesting scene in Western Europe, especially in Germany. Because of our own experience in the field of corporate finance and by considering the insights from the previous economic and financial crises we watched the in 2011 in the USA upcoming Crowdfunding phenomenon, followed by the first steps of Crowdinvesting or crowdfinancing done by the online platform in the USA, named kickstarter.
