The Covenanter (which never saw active service) and Crusader Cruiser tanks were developed between 1939 and 1940. The Crusader first saw action in the North African desert in June 1941: its speed and sleek design made it a hard target to hit, and the tank was well-respected by the Afrikakorps for its velocity in combat. But its hurried development prior to World War II also made it prone to mechanical failure. This book examines the Covenanter and the many variants of the Crusader tank, detailing the designs, developments and disappointments of these infamous World War II tanks.

For most of World War II, British tank development remained faithful to the design philosophy inaugurated during World War I. Experiences in North Africa highlighted flaws in this basic design, however, and the General Staff identified the need for a new heavy cruiser that could combine speed and manoeuvrability with increased armour and armament. The Cromwell Cruiser tank was designed as a result and soon proved itself one of the fastest and most successful tanks deployed by the Allies during World War II. This book details the design and development of the Cromwell and its many variants, from its introduction at D-Day, through its many successes in the final year of World War II and beyond.

The A13 Mk. I was the first British Cruiser tank to use the Christie suspension system and set the style for all other Cruisers built in World War II. Together with the improved Mk. II and Mk. IIA it played an important part in the battles in France in 1940 and North Africa in 1941. This book covers its development, production and service, filling a long-neglected gap in the history of British armored vehicles. It includes over 140 period black and white photos from archives and private collections, many never before published, 7pp 1/35th scale plans, 3 pp technical drawings and sketches, and 27 profusely researched full-color plates. Its author has researched British AFVs for 40 years and has contributed many articles to professional military and modeling magazines.REVIEWS The book opens with 18 pages giving the development and service history of the A13, including many tables of information such as unit strengths, tank availability and the like. Designed using the large road wheels of the Christie suspension system it was used in service during the early stages of the war by the BEF in France, as well as the 8th Army in North Africa. As well as the UK, others were used in Greece, Cyprus and Malta which are all mentioned, as well as some captured in usable condition by the Wehrmacht. While this section is illustrated with helpful archive photos, the book then moves on to providing another 52-page Photo Gallery. Here we find a collection of archive photos, many of which I have not seen before, showing the A13 in the UK as well as in France and North Africa, all of which have well informed and useful captions. There are over 140 archive photos in the book and these include some which I thing modelers will find especially useful in diorama ideas as well as the details illustrated on the tanks themselves.- Military Modelling"Modelers will love the excellent drawings of all the variants of the A13 Cruiser tank family as well as the 1/35 scale color plates which will make finishing and correcting the Bronco model kits much easier... Highly Recommended for all Christie tank design fans and early war British armour fans."- Cookie Sewell

The A13 Cruiser Tank was created by Colonel Giffard Le Quesne Martel after he had witnessed the performance of the fast Soviet BT tanks while on a military mission to Russia in 1936. These had in turn been developed from a prototype tank designed by the mercurial American engineer J. Walter Christie. The British Army quickly imported one of Christie's tanks and set about modifying it to suit their requirements, in collaboration with Lord Nuffield. The result, achieved in a mere two years, was a powerfully armed, highly mobile, though lightly armoured tank. This book follows the development history of the A13 up to and including the Battle of France, where any merits it may have possessed were overshadowed by poor preparation and the inadequate organisation and tactics of the Royal Armoured Corps.

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Pages: 29. Chapters: Centurion tank, Cromwell tank, Crusader tank, Covenanter tank, Comet tank, Sentinel tank, Cruiser tank, Ram tank, Cruiser Mk IV, Cruiser Mk VIII Challenger, Cruiser Mk II, Cruiser Mk III, Cavalier tank, Grizzly I cruiser, FV300 Series. Excerpt: The Centurion was the primary British main battle tank of the post-World War II period, and was a successful tank design, with upgrades, for many decades. The chassis was also adapted for several other roles. Manufacture of the Centurion began in January 1945, and six prototypes arrived in Belgium soon after the war in Europe ended in May 1945. The Centurion served in more wars than any other western tank. It became one of the most widely used tank designs, equipping armies around the world, with some still in service until the 1990s. As recently as the 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict the Israel Defense Forces employed heavily modified Centurions as armoured personnel carriers and combat engineering vehicles. In 1943 the Department of Tank Design was asked to produce a new design for a heavy cruiser tank under the General Staff designation A41. After a series of fairly marginal designs in the A series in the past, and bearing in mind the threat posed by the German 88 mm gun, the War Office demanded a major revision of the design requirements, specifically: increased durability and reliability, a maximum weight of 40 tons and the ability to withstand a direct hit from the German 88 mm gun. Tank Design responded by extending the long-travel 5-wheel suspension used on the Comet with the addition of a sixth wheel and an extended spacing between the second and third wheels. The Christie suspension with internal vertical spring coils was replaced by a Horstmann suspension with external horizontal springs. The hull was redesigned with welded sloped armour, and featured a partially...

“An excellent resource for one just starting out trying to model one of these beasts . . . great background information.” —AMPS Designed with the hard lessons of the North African campaign in mind, including the adoption of a dual-purpose gun capable of firing high-explosive and anti-tank rounds, the Cromwell was one of the most successful of the British cruiser tanks produced during the Second World War. The lack of heavy armor was made up for by the tank’s high speed, provided by a Rolls-Royce Meteor engine. The Centaur was externally almost identical to the Cromwell, the major difference being the installation of the less powerful Liberty engine. While the Centaur equipped the Royal Marines during the Normandy battles, the Cromwell served until the end of the war and formed the basis for the Comet. In his fifth book in the TankCraft series, author and illustrator Dennis Oliver uses official wartime photographs and comprehensively researched, exquisitely presented color profiles to tell the story of the penultimate British cruiser tank. As with all the titles in the TankCraft series, the large full-color section features available model kits and accessories as well as aftermarket products. In addition to the color profiles, there is a gallery of expertly constructed and painted models. A separate section explains technical details and modifications made during production and in the field, giving the modeler all the information required to create an authentic replica of one of the tanks that served from the Normandy beaches to the final battles in Germany.

Cruiser Tank Warfare written by John Plant and has been published by New Generation Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-06-10 with Fiction categories.

Cruiser Tank Warfare is a term used to describe the British concept of armoured warfare based on fast, thinly armoured tanks. The book traces the history of this concept from the publication of 'Mechanised and Armoured Formations' in 1929 up to the end of the war. It does this by following the British understanding of the subject in manuals, 'Modern Formations' being extensively quoted, by considering the development of Cruiser tank design, and by looking at the major actions that Cruisers were involved in. The conclusion drawn is that the Cruiser Tank Warfare concept was fundamentally flawed. It is important to note that the book restricts itself to a detailed investigation of the British experience of tank warfare, only occasionally referring to foreign armies and then purely for comparison. It is confidently planned to publish a companion volume titled 'Infantry Tank Warfare'.
