This book invites you on a systematic tour through the fascinating world of crystals and their symmetries. The reader will gain an understanding of the symmetry of external crystal forms (morphology) and become acquainted with all the symmetry elements needed to classify and describe crystal structures. The book explains the context in a very vivid, non-mathematical way and captivates with clear, high-quality illustrations. Online materials accompany the book; including 3D models the reader can explore on screen to aid in the spatial understanding of the structure of crystals. After reading the book, you will not only know what a space group is and how to read the International Tables for Crystallography, but will also be able to interpret crystallographic specifications in specialist publications. If questions remain, you also have the opportunity to ask the author on the book's website.

Starting from the basic features of crystal morphology and symmetry without assuming that the reader knows anything about crystals this textbook shows how they provide an insight into the way in which crystals are based on a repeating pattern of atoms. After summarizing and comparing the main features of the seven crystal systems and thirty-two crystal classes, the book goes on to treat X-ray crystallography in sufficient detail to provide an understanding of its uses in identification and in textural and structural studies, and to relate it to selected area electron diffraction methods in the electron microscope. Thus the student is brought to a level where he can understand the significance of crystallographic work, and has a thorough background if he wishes to move on to more specialist works. Problems and answers are included

In crystal chemistry and crystal physics, the relations between the symmetry groups (space groups) of crystalline solids are of special importance. Part 1 of this book presents the necessary mathematical foundations and tools: the fundamentals of crystallography with special emphasis on symmetry, the theory of the crystallographic groups, and the formalisms of the needed crystallographic computations. Part 2 gives an insight into applications to problems in crystal chemistry. With the aid of numerous examples, it is shown how crystallographic group theory can be used to make evident relationships between crystal structures, to set up a systematic order in the huge amount of known crystal structures, to predict crystal structures, to analyse phase transitions and topotactic reactions in the solid state, to understand the formation of domains and twins in crystals, and to avoid errors in crystal structure determinations. A broad range of end-of-chapter exercises offers the possibility to apply the learned material. Worked-out solutions to the exercises can be found at the end of the book.

Continuum physics is concemed with the predictions of deformations, stress, temperature, and electromagnetic fields in deformable and fluent bodies. To that extent, mathematical formulation requires the establishment of basic balance laws and constitutive equations. Balance laws are the union of those of continuum thermomechanics and MaxweIl's equations, as coIlected in Chapter 1. To dose the theory it is necessary to formulate equations for the material response to extemal stimuli. These equations bring into play the material properties of the media under consideration. In their simplest forms these are the constitutive laws, such as Hooke's law of dassical elasticity, Stokes' law of viscosity of viscous fluids, Fourier's law of heat conduction, Ohm's law of electric conduction, etc. For large deformations and fields in material media, the constitutive laws become very complicated, in vol ving all physical effects and material symmetry. The present work is concemed with the material symmetry regulations arising from the crystaIlographic symmetry of magnetic crystals. While there exist some works on the thirty-two conventional crystal dasses, exduding the linear case, there exists no study on the nonlinear constitutive equations for the ninty magnetic crystal dasses. Yet the interaction of strong electromagnetic fields with deformable solids cannot be explained without the material sym metry regulations relevant to magnetic crystals. In this monograph, we present a thorough discussion of magnetic symmetry by means of group theory. We consider onlyone scalar function which depends on one symmetric second-order tensor (e. g."
