Globalization has changed the nature of many markets. Previously protected local industries have been forced to become more competitive, a situation that provides both opportunities and challenges. Key among these is the challenge of implementing responsible business practices. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is widely recognized as a worthy commitment to ensure sustainable benefit for both corporations and communities. CSR is also becoming an important base for businesses to build trust and confidence in their stakeholders, with the potential to provide a competitive edge. To ensure sustainable growth opportunities, companies should pursue the three key dimensional values of creation: Profit People Planet Well defined and strategic CSR activities will ensure an optimum balance between social, environmental, and economic factors for sustainable profits. Hence, CSR has to be embedded within the business strategy to provide a competitive edge in the areas of brand equity, corporate reputation, employee retention, and environmental conservation. Although the principles of CSR are essentially the same globally, each location still calls for different emphasis in the implementation process. Successful application of CSR principles is directly influenced by the business understanding of its business strategy in proportion to the needs of the local community. As someone who has implemented all the above activities successfully, author Sri Urip is well placed to discuss effective CSR strategies to 21st century companies.

What initiatives should we develop that will do the most good for the company as well as the cause? Do we include social messages in our advertising, encourage our employees to volunteer, do we modify our business practices? How do we integrate a new initiative into current strategies? These and other challenges will continue to face future leaders. This book provides thoughtful answers to these important questions, and to many more. The book offers suggestions on how to choose among major worthy causes and also how to measure the amount of good achieved both for the recipients and the companies themselves. For decades, multinational corporations benefited from developing countries mainly as a source of cheap labour and weak regulations. Even when corporate social responsibility (CSR) was embraced it has been tailored to customers in the developed world. With the rise of the middle class in emerging economies and social media driven scrutiny of corporate conduct around the globe, CSR increasingly requires an international outlook. Adopting strategic CSR in international business provides multinational corporations with a competitive edge. An emerging field of research around international CSR points to global, local and transnational strategies as viable options. Considering impacting variables such as cultural distance, industry features and brand visibility, recommendations are derived for managers that advance the concept of shared value for business and society. In addition, a set of future research questions is outlined to further the academic discussion around this important aspect of business in the 21th century.

Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: Distinction, University of Lincoln, course: Masters of Business Administration, language: English, abstract: It is argued by several scholars that Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is considered by corporations as strategic for the business because of its contribution to financial performance (Barnett, 2007; Orlitzkyetal., 2003) or to market value (Mackey et al, 2007). Recent studies find it wiser for the firm to act strategically with regard to CSR activities and suggest using the same frame work that guides their core business choices in order to make CSR a source of competitive advantage for the firm (Maxfield, 2008). The stake holder model of strategic management, the inclusion of social demands as strategic issues, as well as suggestions of more general ways in which CSR Programmers can create strategic benefits for the Organization have been included in attempting to integrate the concepts of CSR and corporate strategy (Burke and Logsdon, 1996; Carroll et al, 1987;Galbreath, 2006). In this essay, the author will analyse and discuss the main issues which are needed to consider when managing strategic change in the context of CSR by using the example of different organizations. Moreover, the main issues will be explored and criticised within the context of strategic change and CSR. Furthermore, it will consider the effects of such strategic change on stakeholder, especially with regards to delivering ethical strategies that support long term sustainability.

Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Communications - Public Relations, Advertising, Marketing, Social Media, grade: 65, University of Aberdeen, course: MBA, language: English, abstract: Corporate Social Responsibility is a traditional concept which has existed since before the World War II, (A.B. Caroll & K.M. Shabana). The evolution of concept theoretically relates to Abram’s (1951), who argued that companies should not only focus on profit maximisation, but also should think about its employees, customers and public at large; which was further discussed in seminal book “Social Responsibilities of Businessman” published by Howard R. Bowmen in 1953. Corporate Social Responsibility, when simplified signifies the social responsibilities of a corporate firm. According to the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), CSR is described as “a balanced approach for organisations to address economic, social and environmental issues in a way that aims to benefit people, communities and society”. CSR takes major issues that include human rights, workplace and employee issues, unfair business practices, organisational governance and environmental practices into consideration. Corporate social responsibility is a conceptual where firms tries to integrate social and environmental concerns into their business and operations and in their interaction with their stakeholders on a voluntary basis which as stated by the European commission. Companies as engage business and activities, their certain objectives will be directed towards the society which is likely to improve societal image monetarily as well as non-monetarily, contradictorily not all companies engaging in CSR looks out for monetary outcomes. Organisations like NGO’s engage in CSR to improve the welfare of the society.

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is simply the maximization of a companys value over time, undertaken because, in the long run, social and environmental problems ultimately become financial problems. The justification for CSR is therefore associated with representing the nature and role of the company, as well as its purpose. Companies therefore regard CSR as a strategic investment that is part of a proactive, resilient, inclusive approach, based on the creation of shared value. This approach is capable of reducing negative societal impacts of their activities, or inducing positive impacts if they sustain a hybrid culture, all the while improving their competitive advantage. This book presents a theoretical development that analyzes the challenges of CSR strategies based on the creation of shared value. Two case studies are presented, analyzing the different forms of social innovation strategies capable of inducing this shared value creation.
