Die Krise ist ein omnipräsentes Phänomen in unserer Gesellschaft. Was eine Krise jedoch grundlegend charakterisiert wurde von der Forschung bislang nur unzureichend ermittelt. Dieser Lücke nimmt sich das Buch an. Die Sichtweise der Rhetorik als Erforschung strategischer Kommunikationsprozesse ist dafür eine hilfreiche Ausgangslage: Zeitgleich existieren ganz unterschiedliche Krisenauffassungen. Wir müssen daher stets beachten, wer wann von einer Krise spricht. Eine groß angelegte Korpusanalyse der Parteiprogramme in der BRD von 1949 bis 2017 ermöglicht den Krisen-Topos unter Beachtung unterschiedlicher ideologisch motivierter Perspektiven näher zu beleuchten. Die Krise ist ein argumentativer Joker mit dem sich politische Reformen begründen lassen, eigene Verdienste gelobt werden können und die Versäumnisse des politischen Gegners angeprangert werden können. Mithilfe des Krisen-Topos decken die Parteien vermeintlich lang verschüttete Missstände auf und rufen zu Wandel und Neuausrichtung auf. Die Ergebnisse der Analyse können sowohl genutzt werden, um Krisendiskurse zukünftig besser zu verstehen als auch um sie aktiv mitzugestalten.

Since 1945, what ‘conservative’ means has troubled intellectuals, politicians and parties in the United Kingdom and West Germany. In Britain conservatism was an accepted term of the political vocabulary, denoting a particular tradition of political thought and practice. In West Germany, by contrast, conservatism was a difficult concept for the young democracy to swallow. It carried a heavy antiliberal and antidemocratic burden and led people to question whether there was a place for conservatism within democratic culture after all. The Guardians of Concepts scrutinizes the debates about conservatism in the UK and the Federal Republic of Germany from the late 1940s to the early 1980s. Informed by historical semantics, it conceives of conservatism as a flexible linguistic structure, and shows the importance of language for the self-understanding of many conservatives, who not by chance, have regarded themselves as the guardians of concepts. The intense national and transnational debates about the meaning of conservatism had far-reaching consequences and continue to influence politics today.

Erst mit dem Sturz Josef Müllers, bekannt als Ochsensepp, und der Wahl Hans Ehards zum Landesvorsitzenden im Mai 1949 begann sich die Situation zu entspannen, freilich um einen hohen Preis: Die Partei verfiel, Lethargie machte sich breit. Hinter der konservativen Fassade formierten sich aber reformbereite Kräfte, die sich um den jungen Franz Josef Strauß scharten und deren Stunde erst nach der bayerischen Landtagswahl vom November 1954 schlug, als die CSU den Weg in die Opposition antreten msste.
