En la extraordinaria y múltiple labor literaria de Max Aub, el «Cuaderno verde» ocupa un lugar singularísimo; no es una obra narrativa —aunque no excluya en ocasiones las referencias biográficas en su escritura fragmentaria—, sino fundamentalmente ensayística o, si se quiere, aforística. Son las notas de un pintor incluidas como parte de la «biografía» titulada Jusep Torres Campalans que en 1958 publicó Max Aub. Biografía o novela, las facetas yuxtapuestas de este personaje plural y enigmático componen un «retrato cubista» del que Vicente Rojo aísla por vez primera las notas de este pintor catalán, coetáneo y amigo de Picasso que, tras vivir en París, inmerso en el huracán de las vanguardias de principios de siglo, se trasladó a México donde despareció para siempre de la vida pública en tierras de Chiapas. Vicente Rojo se atreve en su lúcida introducción a este libro a hacerse la “lógica pregunta” sobre la realidad de ambos personajes y a “decidir” que Max Aub es un heterónimo de Jusep Torres Campalans y no éste una invención de aquél. Así pues, el laberinto se complica. Sin embargo, y a la espera de que el lector lo resuelva, lo cierto es que de toda la obra firmada con el nombre de Max Aub, la que Rojo ha seleccionado para esta colección —«el Cuaderno verde»— es la que de forma más inequívoca pertenece no a Max Aub, sino a Jusep Torres Campalans. Los pensamientos, las reflexiones aforísticas, o las alusiones a la amistad de Torres con Pablo Picasso, Jean Cassou o Gertrude Stein, o a sus relaciones con otros grandes protagonistas del arte de la época, se enmarcan en el panorama de la cultura de principios de siglo, cuando Aub, nacido en 1903, era todavía un niño. Las opiniones, conversaciones que aquí aparecen, así como la idiosincrasia, tan auténtica como primaria y radical de su protagonista, no son las de Max Aub, sino las de su heterónimo (o su “autor”, según Rojo), el pintor y anarquista catalán Jusep Torres Campalans nacido el 2 de septiembre de 1886 en Mollerusa (Lleida), que vivió su juventud en Barcelona y luego en París, ciudad que abandonó al estallar la primera guerra mundial para viajar a México, establecerse allí y morir a mediados de la década de 1950 en fecha desconocida.
