Martin Pistorius fue un niño normal hasta que cumplió 12 años y contrajo una extraña infección, una especie de meningitis que ningún médico pudo diagnosticar con certeza, pero fue perdiendo su movilidad hasta tal punto que quedó totalmente inmóvil, solo podía mover sus ojos, pero no tenía forma de comunicarse con los demás. Los médicos pensaron que la enfermedad también le había afectado al cerebro y a su capacidad de discernir. Después de esos años, una enfermera del centro residencial intuyó que Martin entendía todo lo que sucedía y comenzó a intentar comunicarse con él, lo que fue logrando. Poco a poco y ante nuevos estudios médicos y adecuada kinesiología, Martin fue recuperándose hasta tener hoy una vida casi normal. Tiene problemas de movilidad (se mueve en silla de ruedas, y solo puede hablar a través de un ordenador), pero por lo demás, ha logrado estudiar, casarse y vivir independientemente. Lo más impresionante de todo es el buen humor que tiene Martin que se plasma en su libro y que utiliza en todos los emprendimientos que realiza.
