Julio Cortázar, gran admirador suyo, hacía hincapié en la gran parquedad o «economía de medios» de que hacía gala para lograr sus propósitos. Para transmitir la sensación de inquietud y terror la acción transcurría en un solo lugar, en donde todos los detalles estaban subordinados al conjunto y cualquier detalle de poco interés sobraba. La sensación de horror la transmitió de manera directa y en una determinada longitud, la brevedad. En todos sus relatos la tortura, la desesperación, la depresión, los crímenes, las venganzas, la agonía, la locura, se muestran libres y desnudos como el terror y la muerte. Poe anticipó la narrativa de ciencia ficción.
