This book fills the Iberian linguistic and geographical gap in Arthurian studies, replacing the now-outdated work by William J. Entwistle (1925). It covers Arthurian material in all the major Peninsular Romance languages (Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, Galician); it follows the spread of Arthurian material overseas with the seaborne expansion of Spain and Portugal from Iberia into America and Asia in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries; and, as well as examining the specifically Arthurian texts themselves, it traces the continued influence of the medieval Arthurian material and its impact on the society, literature and culture of the Golden Age and beyond, including its presence in Don Quixote, the influential Spanish Arthurian-inspired romance Amadís de Gaula, and in Spanish ballads. Such was its influence that we find an indigenous American woman called ‘Iseo’ (Iseult); and an Arthurian story appeared in an indigenous language of the Philippines, Tagalog, as late as the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Blanqueada por fuera y con un tejado de tejas y una chimenea rota, está sumergida en el verdor de las acacias, de los sauces y de las moreras, plantados un día por los abuelos y los bisabuelos de sus actuales propietarios. No se la distingue entre la masa de verdor; verdor que, dicho sea de paso, no la impide ser una casita de la ciudad. Su ancho patio es uno más entre la fila de patios, también anchos y llenos de verdor, que forman la calle Moskovkaia. Nadie va nunca en vehículo alguno por aquella calle y es raro que alguien transite por ella. Las persianas de la casita están siempre entornadas. Sus inquilinos no necesitan luz, no les hace falta. Las ventanas de la casita no se abren nunca, porque a los inquilinos de la casita no les gusta el aire puro. Las gentes que viven siempre entre moreras, acacias y bardana, son indiferentes a la Naturaleza. Tan sólo a los veraneantes concedió Dios capacidad para comprender sus bellezas, mientras el resto de la Humanidad permanece sumido en la más profunda ignorancia con respecto a ellas. Las gentes no dan valor a aquello de lo que son ricos, y, por si fuera poco, no sabemos amallo que tenemos. Alrededor de la casita hay un paraíso terrestre, todo es verdor..., viven alegres pájaros... Y, en cambio, dentro de la casita... ¡Ay!... Durante el verano, en su interior, la atmósfera es sofocante y agobiadora; durante el invierno hace el mismo calor que en un establecimiento de baños. Hay tufo, aburrimiento y aburrimiento... Hace ya mucho que, con motivo de un asunto, visité por primera vez esta casita. Estaba encargado por su dueño, el coronel Chikamasov, de saludar de su parte a su mujer y a su hija. This transcultural study of cultural production brings to light the ways Spanish literature imagined China by relying on English- and French-language sources. Carles Prado-Fonts examines how the simultaneous dependence on and obscuring of translation in these cross-cultural representations created the illusion of a homogeneous West. He argues that Orientalism became an instrument of hegemony not only between “the West and the rest” but also within the West itself, where Spanish writers used representations of China to connect themselves to Europe, hone a national voice, or forward ideas of political and cultural modernity. Uncovering an eclectic and surprising archive, Prado-Fonts draws on diverse cultural artifacts from popular literature, journalism, and early cinema to offer a rich account of how China was seen across the West between 1880 and 1930. Enrique Gaspar, Luis de Oteyza, Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, and lesser-known authors writing in Spanish and Catalan put themselves in dialogue with Leo Tolstoy, John Dewey, W. Somerset Maugham, Bertrand Russell, Pearl Buck, and André Malraux, as well as stereotypical figures from popular culture like Fu Manchu and Charlie Chan. Throughout, Prado-Fonts exposes translation as a technology of cultural hegemony and China as an appealing object for representation.
