Manuel Díaz Rodríguez, el cultivador de una prosa exquisita, publicó Los cuentos de color en 1899, en pleno auge del Modernismo. Esto explica el tratamiento especial del color, pues en cada cuento hay una correspondencia entre un color y un estado del alma que constituye la atmósfera en la que se mueven los personajes: nostalgia, pasión, amor, tristeza, muerte. Esto se traduce en una profusión de metáforas y símiles visuales con preeminencia de coloraciones de los elementos imaginados. El amor es la causa de las situaciones, pero no hay profundización en los personajes que son más bien bocetos que no realizan efectivamente dentro de la narración. Sus sentimientos son pretextos para que el autor refleje su propia alma intensamente lírica, mística y sentimental.
