Arturo García narra en esta veintena de relatos la cada vez más decadente vida agreste del siglo pasado y lo poco que queda del siglo en curso. En un lenguaje claramente influenciado por los libros de Rulfo, Azuela y Revueltas, el autor recrea los conflictos humanos utilizando como fondo el casi extinto campo mexicano y el hosco relieve de su orografía. Mas no siempre resalta el esplendor del paisaje ni la prosperidad de sus historias. En este sentido, la narrativa se vuelve hosca y ácida con la retórica fiel de sus personajes, quienes toman la pobreza como señal de mala suerte y no como el resultado de la decadencia social que se vive. Culpan a las inclemencias del tiempo y al descuido de los Santos; a la suerte y al destino; a su entidad de pobres como un maleficio divino y no el resultado directo de la ignorancia. La miseria se filtra entre la belleza del paisaje y se propaga sin que esto signifique que los personajes pierdan su dignidad o su carácter, por el contrario, se mantienen estoicos y fieles a su esencia humana honrando así su existencia en un país que cambia rápidamente ante sus ojos. El Chinchorro y otros relatos es pues, un álbum fotográfico de dos siglos: el sepia de un pasado hosco y el colorido de un nuevo siglo que se transforma.
