En el mandamiento de amar al prójimo como a nosotros mismos, este «como» se refiere tanto al amor al otro como al amor a sí mismo. Nos hace comprender que el amor a Dios, el amor al otro y el amor a nosotros mismos son un único y gran amor. También amarse a sí mismo deriva del amor a Dios y lo expresa: es digno, por tanto, de atención no solo psicológica, sino también espiritual. El auténtico amor a sí mismo no tiene nada que ver con el egoísmo: implica saber «hacerse prójimo de uno mismo» y presupone una sana aceptación de sí. Confundir amor a sí mismo y egoísmo tiene efectos negativos no solo sobre el propio bienestar espiritual, sino también sobre cómo amamos a los otros y a ese Otro que es Dios. Se puede decir que el narcisismo puede afectar no solo al amor a sí mismo, sino también al amor al otro y al amor a Dios, quienes demasiado a menudo no son amados por sí mismos, sino como «operadores» al servicio de la propia imagen.
