Antonio Virgili, Professore di storia, geografia antropica e scienze sociali, è Direttore scientifico dell'Istituto Italiano di Scienze Sociali e Presidente del Centro Studi Internazionali. Autore di numerosi saggi di sociologia, storia e geografia, cultore di studi esoterici, araldici e di simbologia, per i suoi ampi interessi è stato definito uno spirito rinascimentale. è membro di varie organizzazioni scientifiche quali: Int. Among the main questions relating to the interpretation of popular religiosity phenomena there are those on the usefulness of historical sources (archaeological and documentary) for the purposes of understanding the mythical-ritual present, on the presumed chronological continuity of practices and beliefs and on the legitimacy and effectiveness of historical-comparative method. These questions deserve to be taken up again on the basis of renewed investigations in the face of the now-occurring dissolution of what has been defined as "peasant civilization" and the renewed interest in intangible heritage both by communities in search of identity matrices and cultural memories and by part of the so-called "cultural market". Studies on the Derveni Papyrus, volume II brings together two new editions of the first fragmentarily extant columns of the Derveni Papyrus and seven scholarly articles devoted to their interpretation. The Derveni Papyrus is by far the most important textual discovery of the 20th century regarding early Greek philosophy, religion, exegetical theory and practice, linguistic ideas, and a host of other areas and issues. But the editorial and interpretative history of this extraordinary document has been very checkered. While the interpretation of the better preserved later columns is still highly controversial in many regards, at least the text of those columns has by and large found a scholarly consensus; but the editorial and interpretative situation with the worse preserved first columns is quite different. This volume offers not one but two editions of the first columns, by Richard Janko and by Valeria Piano, given that it is not currently possible to agree upon a single edition; and it explains clearly and in detail the papyrological problems and doubts that lead to these two editions, making it possible for readers (even non-papyrologists) to form their own informed judgment about the most likely readings to be adopted. Furthermore, it contains a number of articles by leading scholars on the Derveni Papyrus, above all offering original solutions to the question of the relation between the earlier and the later columns, but also providing analysis and interpretation of other, related problems.

Domesticating Empire is the first contextually-oriented monograph on Egyptian imagery in Roman households. Caitlín Barrett draws on case studies from Flavian Pompeii to investigate the close association between representations of Egypt and a particular type of Roman household space: the domestic garden. Through paintings and mosaics portraying the Nile, canals that turned the garden itself into a miniature "Nilescape," and statuary depicting Egyptian themes, many gardens in Pompeii offered ancient visitors evocations of a Roman vision of Egypt. Simultaneously faraway and familiar, these imagined landscapes made the unfathomable breadth of empire compatible with the familiarity of home. In contrast to older interpretations that connect Roman "Aegyptiaca" to the worship of Egyptian gods or the problematic concept of "Egyptomania," a contextual analysis of these garden assemblages suggests new possibilities for meaning. In Pompeian houses, Egyptian and Egyptian-looking objects and images interacted with their settings to construct complex entanglements of "foreign" and "familiar," "self" and "other." Representations of Egyptian landscapes in domestic gardens enabled individuals to present themselves as sophisticated citizens of empire. Yet at the same time, household material culture also exerted an agency of its own: domesticizing, familiarizing, and "Romanizing" once-foreign images and objects. That which was once imagined as alien and potentially dangerous was now part of the domus itself, increasingly incorporated into cultural constructions of what it meant to be "Roman." Featuring brilliant illustrations in both color and black and white, Domesticating Empire reveals the importance of material culture in transforming household space into a microcosm of empire.

Frederic Theis untersucht die römischen Schiffsdarstellungen Italiens und des zentralen Nordafrika von der mittleren Republik und den Kriegen gegen Karthago bis in die Umbruchszeit der Völkerwanderung und Spätantike. Erfasst werden knapp 500 freiplastische Skulpturen und Reliefs, Mosaikbilder, Wandgemälde sowie graphische Zeichnungen von Schiffen, Booten, Flößen und anderen Wasserfahrzeugen in ihrem räumlichen Umfeld; von öffentlichen Monumenten, aus Thermen und Theatern sowie aus Wohnhäusern und Gräbern. Theis legt damit die erste umfassende ikonologisch-topographische Untersuchung dieser Bildwerke aus dem Kerngebiet des Imperium Romanum vor. Es zeigt sich in den Abbildern eine Mentalität, die überraschend stark auf das Maritime und die Seefahrt schlechthin ausgerichtet war, und eine Geisteshaltung, in der das Schiff nicht bloßes Vehikel war für Handel oder Krieg, sondern darüber hinaus mannigfaltige neue Bedeutungszuweisungen erfuhr.

Il volume raccoglie in gran parte gli scritti che Giovanni Morello ha dedicato a Giovan Lorenzo Bernini, nel corso di oltre venti anni di ricerche. Il titolo del volume, "Intorno a Bernini", sta ad indicare che non si tratta di un volume monografico sul grande protagonista del barocco romano, ma si espande a personaggi a lui vicini, o comunque a lui collegati. La parte principale del volume è dedicato a due temi fondamentali: il rapporto tra Bernini ed Alessandro VII, e la "pietas", per non dire il sentimento religioso che animava fortemente la vita e le opere del "cavaliere". Con papa Chigi Bernini ebbe un rapporto lungo e fruttuoso, iniziato a partire dalla sistemazione della cappella Chigi in S. Maria del Popolo, per terminare con le spettacolari imprese della Cattedra di San Pietro e del Colonnato della piazza omonima. Il rapporto fra il Alessandro VII e Bernini fu del tutto particolare, fatto di scambio di idee e di progetti, che superava quello tradizionale tra il committente e l'artista, giungendo persino "a disegnare insieme", come più volte è annotato nel "Diario" di papa Chigi, conservato nella Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana. L'altro aspetto su cui il volume apporta contributi sostanziali è relativo alla spiritualità del Bernini. Una spiritualità profonda e vissuta fino agli ultimi momenti della sua vita, testimoniati dalla realizzazione di due opere, che possono essere considerati il suo testamento: il cosiddetto "Mare di Sangue" ed il busto del "Salvatore". Questa raccolta "di studi e documenti", inserita tra le iniziative del Comitato Nazionale per le celebrazioni del Quinto Centenario della fondazione della Basilica di San Pietro, riteniamo possa essere di aiuto non solo agli studiosi di Bernini e del Barocco romano, ma anche interessante lettura per gli appassionati e i cultori d'arte, fornendo notizie e informazioni su i protagonisti di uno dei periodi di maggiore splendore nella storia della Roma cristiana. Giovanni Morello ha prestato servizio nella Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, come Direttore dell'Ufficio Mostre e Conservatore dei Musei della Biblioteca. Ha pubblicato diversi studi sulla storia della Biblioteca Vaticana e le sue raccolte artistiche. I suoi interessi di ricerca, oltre a Bernini, sono rivolti alla pittura del Rinascimento e dell'età del Barocco. Ha curato numerose esposizioni d'arte, antica e moderna, in Italia e all'estero. Attualmente insegna nei corsi del Master "Architettura, Arti sacre e Liturgia", presso l'Università Europea di Roma. È Presidente della Fondazione per i Beni e le Attività artistiche della Chiesa.
