O uso do termo tecnologia assistiva é recente. No Brasil, foi definido há menos de 15 anos, o que é um indício do pouco conhecimento que se tem de seu significado. Os autores realizaram entrevistas que evidenciaram esse desconhecimento. Sobressaem-se proximidades entre as representações sociais levantadas pelos quatro grupos investigados (professores de escola regular, professores de escola especializada, responsáveis por alunos de escola regular e responsáveis por alunos de escola especializada). O cuidado na análise dos dados e na apresentação de seus resultados é evidente e instiga a um aprofundamento no tema. Mas esse não é o único destaque do livro. Em sua parte inicial, em linguagem de fácil compreensão, oferece uma importante discussão sobre tecnologia assistiva, de interesse não apenas para pais e professores que lidam com algum tipo de deficiência, mas também para estudantes de diferentes áreas e todos aqueles que se interessam pelo tema. A obra Representações culturais e o livro didático de língua inglesa: por uma aprendizagem ressignificativa busca analisar como a cultura e a língua são apresentadas aos estudantes brasileiros em uma das coleções adotadas pelo Plano Nacional do Livro Didático (PNLD) para o ensino de língua inglesa. Isso porque, no presente contexto sociocultural e histórico, compreender a noção de cultura no ensino de inglês é um desafio necessário, visto que o idioma inglês se tornou uma língua de comunicação internacional e nos encontramos em um espaço hibridizado de trocas interculturais em que nossas significações são construídas a cada nova ação discursiva com o outro. Dessa maneira, fica difícil falar em cultura, no singular, quando há várias culturas interagindo e se ressignificando pela linguagem. Sendo assim, para que haja uma formação em que o aprendiz se perceba como um sujeito crítico atuante em diferentes esferas sociais, é preciso que o processo de ensino da língua auxilie-o na percepção e na interação com as diferentes realidades ao seu redor, bem como na constatação do hibridismo cultural que perpassa o uso da língua inglesa. Além disso, sendo o livro didático uma das principais fontes de uso da língua para grande parte dos alunos de escolas públicas brasileiras, conhecer os pressupostos e as representações sociais/culturais em relação ao inglês, provenientes do material didático, é importante para compreendermos como este pode influenciar na percepção acerca da realidade e na formação intelectual do estudante. E, a análise do material didático pode auxiliar na reflexão do professor sobre suas próprias percepções e sobre o trabalho desenvolvido com o auxílio do livro didático em sala de aula.
