"Explores African American cultural products that pose competing narratives of black identities that work through the historical trauma of slavery and its legacy, manifested in systematic and institutional racism. Through the analysis and comparison of Alice Randall's novel, The wind done gone, the visual art of Kara Walker, and the hip-hop magazine The source: magazine of hip-hop music and culture, this project highlights the ways in which some cultural producers, in the 1990s, redefine narratives of black identity and subjectivity."--Abstract.

"Bad Behavior is concerned with the reasons so many readers and critics of Johnson have been led to regularly subsume into the monumental precedent of Johnson the sage, the material conditions of modern authority expressed by self-reflections of Johnson the hack." "Dr. Wechselblatt argues that Johnson's double self-construction as at once high-cultural sage and popular hack dramatizes tensions between learned and commercial cultures in the emerging public sphere of contemporary civil society. As Johnson was acutely aware, the great paradox of cultural criticism is that it depends for its authority on the very culture it criticizes. For this reason, it is particularly useful to read Johnson through his critics - to re-configure, from the directions criticism has taken, criticism's own conditions of possibility." "Bad Behavior investigates the critical reduction of Johnson's discourse to its maxims, and the relation of this critical practice to the peculiarly modern identification felt by fans toward celebrities."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Since 2008, financial firms have paid, in aggregate, in excess of $320 billion in fines related to misconduct. Nearly ten years later, while many large financial firms have increased their attention to bad behavior and cultural drivers, the degree of commitment and progress in these efforts has not been even across the industry. Serious or persistent misconduct continues in some firms. Many organizations have attempted to curb bad behavior through intrusive monitoring and enforcement actions which reflect a lack of trust in their employees. A different approach is needed, one that gets at the root causes of misconduct and attempts to rebuild culture from the bottom up, with the employee at the center. This is where tools from behavioral science can help senior risk officers, compliance and business heads better understand the mind-set of their employees and internal communities and create an environment where the link between ethical behavior and strong business results is promoted. If firms continue to fail in establishing stronger internal cultures, regulators may feel compelled to step in and dictate what they should do. This book emphasizes the need for a change in approach, looking at the increased incidence of misconduct and culture breakdown since the 2008 crisis, how regulators have responded, and includes a series of proposals to restore that trust and reform culture.

For many years, scholars aligned with mainstream research paradigms that make up organizational behavior (OB) have been leaning toward the more positive depiction of organizational reality. To better understand people's behavior in the workplace, they must also explore misbehavior. Organizational Misbehavior (OMB) is a term that was coined by Yaov Vardi about 10 years ago when he found out there were no models for how to predict "misconduct" at work. Thus, the purpose of this book is to delineate a new agenda for organizational behavior theory and research. Devoted to the study and management of misbehavior in work organizations, this volume is divided into three parts. Part I discusses the prevalence of these phenomena. It searches for typologies and definitions for misbehavior in the management literature using a historical perspective and proposes a general framework of OMB. Part II explores some important manifestations and antecedents of OMB at different levels of analysis--the person, the job, and the organization. Finally, Part III presents practical and methodological implications for managers and researchers. The authors offer a comprehensive and systematically developed framework for the development and management of misbehavior in organizations. The book is intended for students, scholars, and practitioners who manage OB.
