Arts Education institutions and programs create an excellent framework for personality development: learning knowledge, learning skills and learning life. Their attainment requires education to be a holistic concept of advancement that includes aesthetic practice and involvement with the arts. It challenges them to use their actions to think about the meaning of life, in as much as everyone can use artistic experiences to affirm and interrogate their self-image. The Research Program of the UNESCO Chair in Cultural Policy for the Arts in Development at the University of Hildesheim in Germany brought together experts from the Universities in Dar Es Salam, Kampala, Nairobi, Pretoria, Johannesburg, Casablanca and Tunis and further independent researchers to exchange concepts in Cultural Policy for Arts Education.

This book is based on the topics, questions and results of the international conference "Aesthetics of Transformation - Arts Education Research and the Challenge of Cultural Sustainability". It aims to foster and sharpen the understanding of the potential role of arts education and arts education research for cultural sustainability. In an ever more complex and interconnected world, culture is a valuable resource for sustainable development. Based on the thesis that the change towards sustainability has to be a change that starts with cultural practices of perception and knowledge, this book makes an important contribution to the broad discourse on cultural sustainability, which has begun to emerge in recent years. In this context, the volume first deals with Intangible Cultural Heritage and how aesthetic practices and certain forms of art are changing through cultural transformation processes. Subsequently, it focuses on issues such as arts and cultural education in times of neoliberalism, (post-)migration and post-coloniality as well as on arts and cultural education under conditions of digital transformation. These theoretical and empirical contributions are complemented by insights into field trips to institutions and exemplary places of practice, showing different representations of educational art practices, cultural heritage, and cultural sustainability. Against this background the book finally offers responses and commentaries that can form the starting point for a far reaching interactive dialogical process on the utmost importance of cultural, aesthetic and arts education as part of a global endeavor for sustainable development.

This book offers insights into the exciting dynamics permeating creative arts education in the Greater China region, focusing on the challenges of forging a future that would not reject, but be enriched by its Confucian and colonial past. Today’s ‘Greater China’ – comprising China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan – has grown into a vibrant and rapidly transforming region characterized by rich historical legacies, enormous dynamism and exciting cultural metamorphosis. Concomitant with the economic rise of China and widespread calls for more ‘creative’ and ‘liberal’ education, the educational and cultural sectors in the region have witnessed significant reforms in recent years. Other factors that will influence the future of arts education are the emergence of a ‘new’ awareness of Chinese cultural values and the uniqueness of being Chinese.

This volume presents the work of social scientists, public policy analysts, policy makers, and arts-funding decision makers. The contributors seek to address serious issues confronting the future of the arts in America by defining the role of social science research in the formulation of public policies. The chapters reflect the diverse disciplinary perspectives and methodologies which make up the broad enterprise of arts research and cover a wide array of current issues in arts research and public policy, including: the current state of arts and arts education research; arts participation by ethnic cultures, baby-boomers, and older adults; emerging patterns of aesthetic choice; public arts policy in the future, and conditions for the growth and effective use of arts research. Academics and students in political science, policy analysis, sociology, economics, arts administration, and education, policy makers, and arts administrators will find The Future of the Arts a valuable resource. The contributors conclude that the future of the arts in America will be shaped by a wide array of forces. The challenge is in avoiding passive reactiveness to these trends, assessing their short-term and long-term influences, and strategically developing policy options that are within the decision-making control of leadership sectors in the complex arts policy world. Until recently, the political context of public arts policy has hindered the development and utilization of arts research. In many ways, this book illustrates the promise of research-based policy formulation for the arts in America.

Scientific Study from the year 2015 in the subject Art - Miscellaneous, , language: English, abstract: The field of non-formal art/s education and vocational training for artists in Africa leads a shadowy existence. Although embracing the vital interface of education/art/culture, related approaches and projects frequently fail to meet the prevalent funding frames. However, African actors have long been autonomously contouring and shaping the interstitial space of non-formality with their ideas, concepts, and practice. What concrete form does their work take? What basic conditions is it subject to? Which formative effects are caused by current cultural and funding policies? These and other questions are elaborated in this volume with special reference to five actors in South Africa, Senegal, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Ethiopia. The authors are: Nicola Lauré al-Samarai, Fouad Asfour, Judith Reker, Rangoato Hlasane and Malose Malahlela
