Es relativamente reciente entre nosotros la conciencia de la importancia que la cultura y las culturas tienen en la configuración de la vida social, económica y política: entendiendo por "cultura" todo aquello que se refiere a las creencias, los símbolos de integración, las prácticas ceremoniales, la forma de sentir, organizarse o relacionarse con el tiempo que pasa: es decir los hábitos y las costumbres que conforman la identidad de los individuos y los pueblos. Por eso la pregunta que se formula en ese cuaderno es si nuestra cultura permite vivir como seres humanos, en respeto y dignidad, o si ha de ser trabajada para orientarla en esa dirección. Y lo cierto es que parece muy necesitada del contrapeso moral que defina la libertad como preocupación por el bien común.Los cristianos tienen una cuota importante de responsabilidad a la hora de regenerar la cultura en claves de servico e implicación pública. La lógica del evangelio anima a ello poniendo en juego los valores del riesgo, la paciencia, la esperanza y el realismo. Las Bienaventuranzas y La Última Cena, por ejemplo, suponen una invitación a observar las tensiones y sufrimientos del presente militando contra todo cuanto quiere hacer imposible el futuro de los pobres y los heridos. El reto, pues, es cómo hacer para que la cultura inspire también el orden económico y político. Es decir, establecer cauces para que la solidaridad se abra paso en nuestro mundo. El evangelio posee la capacidad política de hacerlo reforzando la interioridad y animando a la inserción en la transformación social.

How can a Christian brought up in the metropolis of Sao Paulo speak the gospel clearly to a Buddhist raised in the mountains of Tibet? Every missionary confronts the difficulty of cross-cultural communication. But missionaries from the Third World, Bruce Nicholls says, must understand four cultures--"the Bible's, the Western missionaries' who first brought the gospel, their own, and the people's to whom they take the gospel." Recognizing this, Nicholls proposes that the gospel be contextualized, that is, presented in forms which are characteristic of the culture to which the gospel is taken. The problem is to find the right cultural forms and thus keep the gospel message both clear and biblical. Nicholls deals with tough social, theological and hermeneutical questions and proposes a direction for missions in the future. Bruce J. Nicholls, formerly executive secretary of the World Evangelical Fellowship Theological Commission, was a career missionary in India working in theological education and in pastoral ministry with the Church of North India. Nearly five centuries after the first wave of Catholic missionaries arrived in the New World to spread their Christian message, contemporary religious workers in the Bolivian highlands have begun to encourage Aymara Indians to return to traditional ritual practices. All but eradicated after hundreds of years of missionization, the "old ways" are now viewed as local cultural expressions of Christian values. In order to become more Christian, the Aymara must now become more Indian. This groundbreaking study of the contemporary encounter between Catholic missionaries and Aymara Indians is the first ethnography to focus both on the evangelizers and the evangelized. Andrew Orta explores the pastoral shift away from liberation theology that dominated Latin American missionization up until the mid-1980s to the recent "theology of inculturation," which upholds the beliefs and practices of a supposedly pristine Aymara culture as indigenous expressions of a more universal Christianity. This volume on cultural anthropology presents a Christian perspective for Bible school students of conservative evangelical backgrounds. The hope is that a sympathetic approach to the problems of cultural diversity throughout the world will help young people overcome typical North American cultural biases and bring understanding and appreciation for the diversities of behavior and thought that exist in a culturally heterogeneous world. Grunlan and Mayers take the position of "functional creationism"; and though they discuss some of the problems implied in traditional interpretations of the age of the world and especially of the creation of the human race, they do not attempt to deal with either physical anthropology or the origins of man. They do, however, attempt to deal meaningfully with the problems posed by biblical absolutism and cultural relativism, and their practice. Concluding chapters with a series of thought-provoking questions should prove to be of real help to both the professional and nonprofessional teacher of anthropology.
