Culture and Customs of Haiti begins with an overview of the mountainous island that seemed forbidding to European colonizers. Historical periods, including French colonization, U.S. occupation in the early 20th century, Independence and the Duvaliers' reigns, until today, are reviewed and provide the framework for the volume. A chapter on the people and society details the pride of the black state that managed the only successful slave revolution in history. The extremes of society from the elite to the peasantry and slum dwellers are depicted, along with Haitians in diaspora. Religion in Haiti, with the strong amalgamation of Roman Catholicism and vaudou, a West African import, is then explained. A Social Customs chapter notes the joy that is found in such an economically depressed culture. The media and literature and language chapters necessarily unfold in the context of Haiti's political history. A section on writing in Creole is especially intriguing. Finally, chapters on the performing arts and visual arts evoke the energy and color of the people in such forms as vaudou jazz and dance, contemporary rara rock, and the folkloric influence on Haitian painting. A chronology and glossary supplement the text.

Vodou, the folk religion of Haiti, is a by-product of the contact between Roman Catholicism and African and Amerindian traditional religions. In this book, Leslie Desmangles analyzes the mythology and rituals of Vodou, focusing particularly on the inclusion of West African and European elements in Vodouisants' beliefs and practices. Desmangles sees Vodou not simply as a grafting of European religious traditions onto African stock, but as a true creole phenomenon, born out of the oppressive conditions of slavery and the necessary adaptation of slaves to a New World environment. Desmangles uses Haitian history to explain this phenomenon, paying particular attention to the role of the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century maroon communities in preserving African traditions and the attempts by the Catholic, educated elite to suppress African-based "superstitions." The result is a society in which one religion, Catholicism, is visible and official; the other, Vodou, is unofficial and largely secretive.

Part textbook, part life-story, part theological exposé, Understanding Haitian Voodoo comes from a much-respected Haitian gentleman who writes as a lawyer, judge, and evangelist who cares deeply about his people and their bondage in Voodoo. "Voodoo is not simply a myth, toward which we can remain indifferent. It is not just popular culture that we should teach and practice in schools through dances and songs. The gods of Voodoo are not simply idols or harmless gods. They are real beings, intelligent beings, they lust after worship and are full of cruelty." With testimonies from Voodoo priests, followers, witch doctors and more, Understanding Haitian Voodoo is a deep observation of Haitian Voodoo through the eyes of Christian faith, molded in Haitian theology that is biblical, contemporary, relevant and transformational. From his identity as a Christian believer and as a Haitian, proud of his culture, traditions, language and customs, author Emmanuel Félix brings a remarkable contribution to a better understanding of the relationship of Voodoo to Haitian culture, to Christianity, to zombies, community life, religions and beliefs, identity and more. The final conclusion of this majestic work confirms all that man seeks is found in the Almighty God Jehovah, through Jesus Christ, and in Him alone, no matter a man's race, culture and beliefs. Whether you're planning to visit Haiti, seeking to pray more intelligently for the work of the Gospel or are simply looking to learn more about the Haitian people, this book is a must-read. Read this book prayerfully, with a Bible at your side and an eye on the realities of life in Haiti. Published by Radio 4VEH, The Evangelistic Voice of Haiti, serving God and the Haitian people through effective Christian broadcasting since 1950. For a long time many people, especially students and colleges and universities were waiting for a book that can teach them everything about Haitians, Folklore, and oral tradition. Finally, it is here. I plan to publish this book in English, Spanish and many other languages, in order to let people better understand "Haitians" the first free black nation in the new world and the second after the United States of America. "Folklore is the highest expression of the Heart of a people. Folklore can give a solution to some of the most obscure problems of history, and bring clarity to many speculations." The systematic exploitation of our folk topics, the in-depth mixing of our cultural richness to the facet will contribute to preserve the originality of a Haitian. The swing-low, thus relates to each and everyone. This book awaits the collaboration of almost eight million Haitians, of the interior and the Diasporas: the Oral tradition of a country like Haiti, that has a traditional culture, cannot be contained in the brain of about sixty individuals. It is time to rally. The title of this book denotes it at the bottom of the antimony or a certain character of complementary between the expressions of Folklore and Oral tradition. The word Folklore appeared for the first time in August 22, 1846 in Athenoeum, under the signature of the English archeologist William John Thorns. Admittedly, the field of folklore was restricted at the beginning, widened with time until it embraced all human life. As much to say that it meets that of the oral tradition. Saint- Yves says "that it constitutes one of the most significant branches of Cultural Sociology." In April 1927, Saint-Yves gave a conference to the annual General Assembly of the Belgian Company of Folklore in Brussels: "Apology for the Folklore or the Science of the Popular Tradition" or the two expressions are assimilated. Folklore is considered by him like the science of the popular tradition; but, according to us "Haitians," popular tradition does not imply simply orality, it also implies the material aspect of what one can call traditional Ethnography and, not only tales, legends, riddles, proverbs, and songs.

Margaret Mitchell Armand presents a cutting edge interdisciplinary terrain inside an indigenous exploration of her homeland. Her contribution to the historiography of Haïtian Vodou demonstrates the struggle for its recognition in Haïti’s post-independence phase as well as its continued misunderstanding. Through a methodological, original study of the colonial culture of slavery and its dehumanization, Healing in the Homeland: Haitian Vodou Traditions examines the sociocultural and economic oppression stemming from the local and international derived politics and religious economic oppression. While concentrating the narratives on stories of indigenous elites educated in the western traditions, Armand moves pass the variables of race to locate the historical conjuncture at the root of the persistent Haïtian national division. Supported by scholarships of indigenous studies and current analysis, she elucidates how a false consciousness can be overcome to reclaim cultural identity and pride, and include a sociocultural, national educational program, and political platform that embraces traditional needs in a global context of mutual respect. While shredding the western adages, and within an indigenous model of understanding, this book purposefully brings forth the struggle of the African people in Haïti.

This thesis examines the characteristics of the spirits Ezili, Legba, and Ogou, in order to determine which aspects of their manifestations incorporate themes of syncretism from Catholic tradition, and which aspects reflect visual tradition that emerged from distinctly Haitian tradition. Elements of Catholic and African traditions, discernable within Vodou iconography, act as a basis upon which the practice was further augmented. These adaptations reveal the mixing of cultures and continuation of tradition that is of central importance to the development of Vodou, as reflections of the process through which the religion overcame the social problems faced by the practitioners, as well as the culturally devastating consequences of Haitian colonial history. These diversifications from the Christianity and African traditions reflect the ingenuity and resourceful nature of Vodou, which through its fluid nature, can be transformed to accommodate the needs of the devotees. Through a postcolonial methodology, this thesis demonstrates that through the syncretism of Catholic themes, the influence of the West African origins of the Vodou, and the unique experiences of the people in Haiti, the iconography of Vodou visual culture interacted of other religions as it evolved into a distinctly Haitian practice. By looking at the spirits Ezili, Legba, and Ogou, alongside their counterparts of the Virgin Mary, St. Peter, and St. George (or St. James) this essay will outline the syncretization of these spirits with Christian icons, while making parallels to the development of Christian iconography which borrowed from pagan imagery in an effort to place the importance of a figure within a pre-established lineage that placed importance on the image.

Seminar paper from the year 2002 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (Seminar für Englische Philologie: Forschungs- und Lehrbereich Amerikanistik), course: Culture Studies IV: Key Concepts in Culture Studies, language: English, abstract: Krik? Krak!by the Haitian author Edwidge Danticat is a collection of short stories that has received wide recognition on the international book market and in literary circles. Danticat, who has already been awarded many literary prices in her young career, presents her native country Haiti in many facets, thereby conveying an impression of its beauty and cultural richness with all the positive and negative aspects. The title of the collection refers to “the Haitian tradition of the storyteller calling out ‘Krik?’ and willing listeners gathering around and answering ‘Krak’” (Atanasoski), which already suggests the importance of stories in Haitian culture, and furthermore hints at the Haitian way of life.Krik? Krak!offers a fascinating approach to this Haitian culture and the tradition of story-telling. Furthermore, the reader gains an insight into Haitian reality from very different, though mainly female, perspectives; Danticat’s writings emphasize the experience of Haitian women from all social levels. All short stories inKrik? Krak!present interesting aspects of Haitian culture, but I have decided to refer exclusively to the last short story of the collection, “Caroline’s Wedding.” In contrast to the other short stories, the plot of “Caroline’s Wedding” takes place in the U.S., introducing to the reader a Haitian immigrant family living in New York. Apparently, the immigrant experience is central to many of Danticat’s writings. Beyond this, “Caroline’s Wedding” reflects on Haiti’s culture from a distinct cultural setting, which makes the story very suitable for an examination of cultural identity. Generally, in order to understand why so many Haitians emigrate from their home country, and to understand Danticat’s allusions to incidents of the past, some information about Haiti’s history might be helpful. Moreover, the impact of the immigrant experience on Danticat’s life will be pointed out by giving some information about her biographical background. In “Caroline’s Wedding,” Danticat touches upon many aspects of the immigrants’ situation in a foreign country, but the question of identity is certainly central to it. The story deals with three women who represent different stages of naturalization in the U.S., and different levels of identification with the U.S. and Haiti.
