This book shows that the Southern Question is far from just an Italian issue, for its origins are deeply connected to the formation of European cultural identity between the mid-eighteenth and late-nineteenth centuries."--Jacket.

Summary: This study throws new light on the Roman impact on Italic religious structures in the last four centuries BC and, more generally, on the complex processes of change and accommodation set in motion by the Roman expansion in Italy. Cult places had a pivotal function among the various 'Italic' tribes known to us from the ancient sources, which had been gradually conquered and subsequently controlled by Rome. Through an analysis of archaeological, literary and epigraphic evidence from rural cult places in Central and Southern Italy including a case study on the Samnite temple of San Giovanni in Galdo, the authors investigate the fluctuating function of cult places in among the non-Roman Italic communities, before and after the establishment of Roman rule.

The primary purpose of this thesis is to obtain knowledge of what shapes a society, and what makes it move in a certain direction. Although several people have conducted research in this area, also in Italy, I believe that the Sicilian question is still one that needs to be answered. The purpose is to investigate, describe and analyse the factors that have contributed to the fact that Sicily in certain areas is less developed than many other Italian regions and the Italian average. It is my belief, as a scholar of Italy and Italian culture, that Sicily is an area of research still in need of much attention. Almost 150 years have passed since the Unification of Italy and not only are there still huge gaps in the living standards and opportunities between the citizens in northern and central Italy and the citizens in southern Italy, but in some areas the gap is growing larger. These considerations have encouraged me to conduct the investigations in this thesis based on the following research question: Why is Sicily still less developed than the many other regions in Italy and the Italian average, when almost 150 years have passed since the Unification? In order to answer this main question, I have listed the following sub-questions, which will also each constitute a chapter in the analysis: - How can Sicily be characterised as a society, seen from a theoretical perspective? - How can we describe the Sicilian civic culture and its role in society? - What is the role of the mafia? With this study I hope to offer not only results as to why Sicily has gone in this direction, but also to bring forward a solution to the question of overcoming any obstacles. This is a very specific case, the study and analyses are of Sicily, but the theories and results aspire to be useful for anyone who studies sociology and cultural understanding, and wants to analyse any given society.

The ‘Southern Question' has been a major topic in Italian political, economic and cultural life for a century and more. During the Cold War, it was the justification for heavy government intervention. In contemporary Italy, a major part of the appeal of the Lombard League has been its promise to dissociate the South from the North, even to the point of secession. The South also remains a resonant theme in Italian literature. This interdisciplinary book endeavours to answer the following: - When did people begin to think of the South as a problem? - Who - intellectuals, statisticians, criminologists, political exiles, novelists (among them some important southerners) - contributed to the discourse about the South and why? - Did their view of the South correspond to any sort of reality? - What was glossed over or ignored in the generalized vision of the South as problematic? - What consequences has the ‘Question' had in controlling the imaginations and actions of intellectuals and those with political and other forms of power? - What alternative formulations might people create and live by if they were able to escape from the control of the ‘Question' and to imagine the political, economic and cultural differences within Italy in some other way? This timely book reveals how Southern Italians have been affected by distorted versions of a complex reality similar to the discourse of ‘Orientalism'. In situating the devaluation of Southern Italian culture in relation to the recent emergence of ‘anti-mafia' ideology in the South and the threat posed to national unity by the Lombard League, it also illuminates the world's stiff inter-regional competition for investment capital.

Commonly referred to collectively as the anni di piombo -- years of lead -- the 1970s have been seen as a parenthesis in Italian history, which was dominated by political violence and terrorism. The seventeen essays in this wide-ranging collection adopt different scholarly perspectives to challenge this monolithic view and uncover the complexity of the decade, exploring its many facets and re-assessing political conflict. The volume brings to the fore the ruptures of the period through an examination of literature, film, gender relations, party politics and political participation, social structures and identities. This more balanced assessment of the period allows the vibrancy and dynamism of new social and cultural movements to emerge. The long-lasting effects of this period on Italian culture and society and its crucial legacy to the present are lucidly revealed, dispelling the widely-held belief that the 1970s were largely a regressive decade.
