Essay in the subject Sociology - Medical Care, , language: English, abstract: According to WHO health is the complete state of physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely absence of disease or infirmity. (WHO 2010). When an individual is claimed to be healthy, it is considered the entire being is in a state of wellness and not merely absence of pathogens acting against one’s physical being. Cure and healing, although they may be interchanged have different meanings if taken in their rightful context. This misconception extend also to disease, sickness and illness. When individuals experience disease, there is always a tendency to think in obsolete terms of being curable and incurable. When we talk of curing we talk of the restoration of health by eliminating the symptoms that characterise a disease. Healing on the other hand calls for the restoration of wholeness. Healing is an integrative process that go beyond the physical but also include mental, emotional and spiritual vitality and wellness. Whilst cure could be instant, healing usually takes time. Also one can be cured but without healing and the reverse is also true.

The Science of Cure defines and describes the elementary types of cures for any curable illnesses. These elements are explored and combined to cover complex, illnesses, and chronic illnesses. The book explores the impact of this theory of cure on many concepts, including: illness, disease, sickness, healing, transformation, placebo. Three basic causes of illness are reviewed, and their associated cure processes. Cure is a verb. Is a cure holistic or reductionist? How can we tell? The concepts of holistic and reductionist treatments are clearly defined, such that we can easily determine if any treatment is holistic, reductionist, or a blend. Is prevention better than cure? Umm.. Not when we are sick. In addition, because many illnesses cause secondary diseases - a cure is often the best preventative. The Science of Cure is a condensation, expansion, and exploration of the concepts introduced in the books The Elements of Cure and A Calculus of Curing – developed over several years of research and writing for the blog site Healthicine – the Arts and Sciences of Health and Healthiness. It is also an expansion of the papers A Definition and Exploration of Cure published on Academia.edu in July 2018 and A Theory of Cure, 2019. This book defines fundamental concepts of cure, cures, curing, and cured, and many related topics including cause, illness, disease, sickness, treatment, remission, and recurrence.

Throughout history and throughout the world today, problems of health, sickness, and medical treatment have been intimately interwoven with social, cultural, and political life generally. Medical anthropology deals with these problems from a biocultural perspective, recognizing the deep connections between cultural patterns, historical change, and life processes. This book draws on a rich array of ethnographic cases from around the world to demonstrate the complexities of ideas and practices that surround the health of the human body, and how health is impacted by the beliefs and practices of the community. The authors make particular use of new materials from their field areas among the Hagen and Duna people in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea. The book is intended as a textbook useable for both anthropology courses and courses for medical students. The topics covered include a survey of earlier works in medical anthropology, regimens of bodily treatment, sex and reproduction, medical pluralism, doctor-patient communication, epidemiology, ethnopsychiatry, illness and the emotions, and how diseases such as AIDS have altered the ways in which individuals see themselves and 'traditional' practices alter to accommodate new diseases.Andrew Strathern and Pamela J. Stewart are a husband and wife anthropological team who work in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea and the Lowlands of Scotland.

The Healing Paradox written by Steven Goldsmith, M.D. and has been published by North Atlantic Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-18 with Health & Fitness categories.

Why does Western medicine fail to cure chronic physical and mental illness? Why do so many treatments and drugs work only for a limited time before eventually losing effectiveness or producing harmful side effects? Dr. Steven Goldsmith's answer is at once counterintuitive and commonsensical: the root of the problem is our combative approach. Instead of resisting and fighting our ailments, we should cooperate with and even embrace them. We should look for and apply treatments that are integrated with the causes of illness, not regard illness as an enemy to conquer. This "hair of the dog" principle is already widely evident in practice. Take, for example, vaccines and inoculations, which are small doses of the microbes that cause the diseases being prevented; the use of the stimulant Ritalin to calm and ground people with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder; and radiation, which is both a well-known cause of cancer and a well-known method of treating it. These are just a few of Goldsmith's many examples, which he relays in clear, evocative, and thought-provoking language. Perhaps most compelling of all, he explores reasons why this clearly effective principle is ignored by Western medicine. Drawing on fascinating case studies and personal experiences from his forty-year career as a medical doctor and psychiatrist—as well as abundant clinical, experimental, and public health data that support his seemingly paradoxical assertion—Dr. Goldsmith presents an exciting, revolutionary approach that will change the way you think about medicine and psychotherapy.¶

"Portrait of Healing chronicles the life and passions of the gifted and visionary physican, Edward L. Trudeau. Hope, courage, and unselfish devotion to others most certainly describes this man who founded the Adirondack Cottage Sanitorium, later to be renamed the Trudeau Sanitorium, in Saranac Lake, New York. This sanitorium was the first of its kind in America and became the model for the cure and treatment of tuberculosis throughout the United States. Trudeau, who was also suffering from tuberculosis, spent countless hours learning to correctly identify the tubercle bacillus. He created the first laboratory in the country to be exclusively devoted to the study of tuberculosis and developed unprecedented scientific evidence of the interaction between environment and disease."--Dust jacket flap.
