What motivated the Brazilian government, he asks, to create a secret ban on Jewish entry in 1937 just as Jews desperately sought refuge from Nazism? And why, just one year later, did more Jews enter Brazil legally than ever before? The answers lie in the Brazilian elite's radically contradictory images of Jews and the profound effect of these images on Brazilian national identity and immigration policy. Lesser's work reveals the convoluted workings of Brazil's wartime immigration policy as well as the attempts of desperate refugees to twist the prejudices on which it was based to their advantage. A história da luta pela valorização da escola pública no Brasil é pontuada por avanços e reveses, e cabe assinalar que após avanços importantes – como a aprovação do Fundeb, que, ainda que de forma tímida, mudou o compromisso da União com a educação básica, com a aprovação do PSPN, com a inclusão do CAQi no Plano Nacional de Educação (infelizmente sem sair do papel) – o Brasil vive um momento de retrocesso. A partir do golpe de 2016, consubstanciado essencialmente na EC no 95/2016, que congela os gastos primários da União por 20 anos, com repercussões imediatas nas posturas de estados e municípios, há pouca probabilidade de se implementar o PNE e, particularmente, de garantir o cumprimento de sua Meta 17, que determina a equiparação salarial dos professores com a remuneração recebida por profissionais com o mesmo nível de formação. Hoje, essa equiparação não ocorre em nenhum estado brasileiro. Mudar esse cenário implica um conhecimento profundo da realidade e um compromisso com a luta coletiva, características que identificam os autores deste trabalho e, tenho certeza, você, leitor.
