This study updates and extends a previous report that reviewed the economic contribution of provincial parks to the British Columbia economy. It begins with an overview of the provincial park system and presents a qualitative analysis of the recreational, conservation, and heritage benefits resulting from parks and ecological reserves. Where appropriate, specific types of social and economic benefits related to these topics are identified. It then outlines the indicators used to measure the parks' economic impacts and their associated benefits, and presents quantitative estimates of economic activity attributable to the provincial parks. The estimates are made using an input/output model that incorporates input/output data from Statistics Canada along with additional data concerning employment and tax flows from other government sources. Finally, the study forecasts future economic benefits from the provincial parks under two scenarios of potential economic activity, based on the year 2002. The appendix includes additional details on the economic measures used in the analysis.

Coopers & Lybrand undertook a study of the benefits of British Columbia's provincial park system using three approaches: a qualitative analysis of the range of social, environmental, and economic benefits of the park system; a quantitative analysis of economic benefits using an input/output model; and a quantitative assessment of the non-market economic benefits of the park system based on an analysis of user day values. This report presents the findings of the study, using 1993 as a base year (the latest year for which full data were available). The report also includes statistics on such matters as park attendance and visitor expenditures.
