My dear friends, I am very pleased and honored to give the opening address in the first Nishinomiya-Yukawa Memorial Symposium on Theoretical Physics. Nishi nomiya City wishes to extend a warm and sincere welcome to the many participants here in this Symposium. Nishinomiya is the city where Dr. Hideki Yukawa (1907-1981) was living when he published the famous paper "On the Interactions of Elementary Particles. I" in 1935. For this work he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1949. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of his meson theory, our city has started the "Nishinomiya-Yukawa Memorial Activities" to promote the study of the oretical physics, which, we believe, is important for the progress of human society. The annual activities consist of this Symposium, the Nishinomiya Yukawa Memorial Prize for promising young physicists and Memorial Lec tures for citizens every year. They are conducted by the Steering Committee, the chairman of which is Professor K. Nishijima, the director of the Research Institute for Fundamental Physics, Kyoto University. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the members of this Committee for their great efforts, as well as to the members of the Organizing Committee of this Symposium. Dr. Yukawa said in his book "Tabibito" ("A traveler" in Japanese), "One who inquires into the truth is just like a traveler without a map." I shall be very happy and proud if this Symposium is successful and provides a useful map for many, particularly for young, physicists.

This NATO Advanced Study Institute provided an up dated understanding, from a fundamental and deep point of view, of the progress and current problems in the early universe, cosmic microwave background radiation, large scale structure, dark matter problem, and the interplay between them. The focus was placed on the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation. Emphasis was given to the mutual impact of fundamental physics and cosmology, both at theoretical and experimental-or observational-levels, within a deep and well defined programme, and a global unifying view, which, in addition, provides of careful inter-disciplinarity. Special Lectures were devoted to neutrinos in astrophysics and high energy astrophysics. In addition, each Course of this series, introduced and promoted topics or subjects, which, although not being of purely astrophysical or cosmological nature, were of relevant physical interest for astrophysics and cosmology. Deep understanding, clarification, synthesis, careful interdisciplinarity within a fundamental physics framework, werethe maingoals ofthe course. Lectures ranged from a motivation and pedagogical introduction for students and participants not directly working in the field to the latest developmentsand most recent results. All Lectures were plenary, had the same duration and were followed by a discussion. The Course brought together experimentalists and theoretical physicists, astrophysicists and astronomers from a variety of backgrounds, including young scientists at post-doctoral level, senior scientists and advanced graduatestudentsas well.

The textbooks “Solid State Theory" give an introduction to the methods, contents and results of modern solid state physics in two volumes. This first volume has the basic courses in theoretical physics as prerequisites, i.e. knowledge of classical mechanics, electrodynamics and, in particular, quantum mechanics and statistical physics is assumed. The formalism of second quantization (occupation number representation), which is needed for the treatment of many-body effects, is introduced and used in the book. The content of the first volume deals with the classical areas of solid state physics (phonons and electrons in the periodic potential, Bloch theorem, Hartree-Fock approximation, density functional theory, electron-phonon interaction). The first volume is already suitable for Bachelor students who want to go beyond the basic courses in theoretical physics and get already familiar with an application area of theoretical physics, e.g. for an elective subject "Theoretical (Solid State) Physics" or as a basis for a Bachelor thesis. Every solid-state physicist working experimentally should also be familiar with the theoretical methods covered in the first volume. The content of the first volume can therefore also be the basis for a module "Solid State Physics" in the Master program in Physics or, together with the content of the 2nd volume, for a module "Theoretical Solid State Physics" or "Advanced Theoretical Physics".
